Carinthia Freikorps

Not widely known was the Carinthian Resistance Movement (1918/19) against the claims of the Yugoslavs after the armistice of 1918 of parts of Carinthia ( southern and south eastern border region, including elevated Klagenfurt and Villach).

This wehrpass although it has no WW2 service.......has (what I believe) very rare entries with regards this historical period

I read his name was Josef Oberegger, born in Leoben (in the Steiermark in Austria).

I have a Karntner Kreuz II cl. which I am selling on eBay. This is the cross he would have received.

I'll post the pics here. This is the one for Bravery. The same cross could also be given for Merit and would then say "Für Verdienst".

There were also two types of manufactured crosses. The first ones were made of zinc and suspended on the suspender used for the Karl Truppen Kreuz.

Later the crosses were made in silver or silver plated bronze and suspended from a more ornate suspender; the same used for the Order of Leopold.

The silver/silvered ones are much scarcer and thus more valuable.

Here is an example of the scarcer silvered Kärntner Kreuz on the ornate suspender.

It's on a dealer's site for 120 Euros, an absolute bargain price, particularly when you consider that Huesken is selling a zinc version of the 'für Verdienste' version for an outrageous (as usual) 215 Euros.

Very nice ID.
The interesting thing is that German speaking and Slovene speaking (Windisch) "Carinthians" or "Slovenes", fought togheter on both sides (of course very few german speaking people on the SHS side).

Very interesting Wehrpaß. Especially for me because I have a large collection of Carinthian Resistance Movement and Carinthian plebiscite in 1920.

Special Carinthian Cross for bravery
General Carinthian Cross for Merit
Special Carinthian Cross for Merit

And legitimacy (award document) for a General Carinthian Cross for bravery.
