Normally I would say, there is nothing better than a medal of the Eiserne Division. What can only be better? The medal on a medal bar!

This was posted in another forum! Not from my collection.

Has anybody more informations about documents for the medal? Existed different kinds of documents? Others than this one?

PS: Who made the medals of the Eiserne Division? Made by a German maker or made by a foreign maker, too?

                Hi,
There was only one type of documents, the one you showed. And no, only one maker from Germany made these medals, that's for sure!

Where do you got the information, that only one maker made those medals? Do you know, which German maker it was?

If only one maker existed, it means all original medals should be nearly identical. Is it known, if different medal variants were made during the years?

                      Thanx Jim!
Sergeant-As far as I'm concerned, only one type of medal is accepted as original, made by the same die, never heard about any other, only fakes. Did you?
So yes, all known originals are identical. Do not forget, that it was produced in 1920 in necessary quantities, and already in 1933 was not allowed to wear anymore. I personally have no information about later factory production of this medal . Of course we can't exclude personal orders through jewellers.
Mmmmm...intrigue I DO know who produced it, but it will stay confidential untill Baltic Cross book will be released in English, it will include this small secret as well There will even be a scan of a part of catalogue.

Ok, the maker is not the most interesting information about the medal. I compared medals, which we call original medals. It is right, the most of those medals have identical details.

Another question is, how many soldiers fought in the Eiserne Division? 14000 soldiers? More? How many medals were made between 1920-1933? The document says, it existed a "Verein ehemaliger Angehöriger der Eisernen Division" = a veterans organization! Who was allowed to wear a such a medal? Everybody, who had served in the Eiserne Division? Only members of that veterans organization?

PS: Here is another medal. Looks like a fake in a better quality.

Eiserne Division had different manpower in different times--from 5000 in May 1919 to 12 000 in October 1919 when they joined Awaloff. But seems like only around 6000 men survived and were evacuated in December 1919. How many of them got this medal? That is the question.
Do not forget that together with Russian Western Army medal and SSVK medal this award was a kinda "commercial" project, so every awarded person paid for it himself. This fact might exclude some of the awarded people. On the other hand, me (and you too, as I understand) have seen a group for a guy in FK Stever, who got this medal, having absolutely no relations with Eiserne Division (he was in FK Stever and later in Deutsche Legion/Awaloff army) !
To complete the picture, the award list you showed has the highest number, 3017, so we at least can be sure about this quantity (well, just on paper).

Perhaps it will stay a mystery, how many medals were really made for Freikorps veterans.

Who has Eiserne Division miniature medals in his collection?

This one looks like a fake.
