Just responding to the question of plastic vs. wood.
In the 70s, many of the soldiers in Berlin would visit East Berlin close to Christmas time, specifically for the purpose of buying East German toys made from wood.
While most of the stuff I saw in East Germany appeared to be cheap and of poor quality, the Leica Camera was one "Hallmark" and Wooden Toys were another "Hallmark" of East German skill. At least to my recollection. This would have been between 78 and 80.
I saw in American homes every Christmass, around the X-mas Tree, a lot of East German "Wood" construction Toys of every conceivable type.Michael D. GALLAGHER
