Hello all, I have a few questions about an item I just purchased. I have just got a border guard handbook printed in 1978 (revision 5 I believe) and I have to admit I am a bit disappointed and surprised with the contents. I thought there would be many more pictures showing equipment, tactics etc. that I could use to help put together my impression, much as there are in the Grundwissen. Compared to the Grundwissen, there is relatively little information to be gleaned from pictures. The Grundwissen contains all the basic military information such as uniforms, ranks, marching and things of this nature and I can find no reference to any of these things in my Grenzdienst handbook. One thing that surprised me though, there was a large section on working with motorized infantry and quite a bit of information about the RPK light machine gun and PK series of medium machine guns and the RPG-7. These are items which I know the Grenztruppen had available to them, but I thought they were no where near as commonly found as the standard MPi's. Looking on German e-bay right now, there is a revision 6 Grenzdienst handbook that shows many more pictures of uniforms and equipment, ranks, BW units and insignia, etc which is more along the lines of what I thought mine would contain. Is anyone here familiar with the Grenzdienst handbooks and why there is such a difference between revisions 5 and 6 and why revision 5 seems to lack the basic military deportment and skills? Did all East German military recruits attend a basic military training together and then move on to specialised training such as border guard, infantry, medical, etc.? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As it is an addition with special Info on Border Service you need all the other books too. In some Handbooks is a column where all other Books are stated what have to be used to complete the Info.
Don't know whre I have mine in the moment to compare the edition I have.
Is your's the solid green one?

Thank you for your response Nico. Yes, the manual I just received has a green vinyl cover and has Handbuch fur den Grenzdienst written in white at the top. Below that is a gray square with a white AK in front of a border marker embossed on it. So just to clarify, a new Grenzer recruit showing up for training would receive both a Grundwissen and a Grenzdienst handbook?

Can't remember what Book it was where I saw that List printed in. Maybe it was the Handbuch Nachrichten or Grundwissen from the Kampfgruppen what is double as thick as the standard Grundwissen.
