    Collecting Cautions

It is by necessity (no more room in the house) that I store part of my DDR collection in the garage. And it's finally cool enough to spend time out there without roasting in the heat. So this evening I was doing my twice a year check for moths and deteriorating East German plastic.

Most of the stuff out there is field gear and uniforms and I found things I'd long forgotten like Kampfgruppen and Zivilverteidigung field uniforms, three rain pattern cammo helmet covers, an entrenching tool I didn't know I had and large amounts of Soviet uniforms and equipment.

It was a bit like Christmas but I would like to pass along a few cautions:

    1) East German plastic and rubber items do not like being stored in an environment with large fluctuations in heat and humidity. I had to toss two of those black plastic covered flight crew hats as they had completely disintegrated. Even worse, that black plastic that flaked off and sticks to just about everything. I've also noticed that the elastic in most of the uniforms I have out there has dried out.

    2) The decontamination kit in your gas mask is highly corrosive. I learned this several years ago when all the metal parts of the gas mask corroded as well as everything on the shelf above it, including aluminum items! It also discolored my NBC suit. I now keep that decon kit double bagged in freezer bags and it appears to have caused no more damage. A few months ago I acquired a second mask with decon kit and the same type of corrosion and discoloration had occurred with it.

    3) The garage is an ideal place for moths, especially if your have wool uniforms. I've got mothballs and ceder blocks and chips out there and still find evidence of moths. Thankfully none of my NVA uniforms show new damage, but some of my US uniforms do despite the liberal application of mothballs. And for some reason they have never messed with my Russian uniforms, even the heavy wool overcoat I have.

    Genossen,
Sound words of warning, the very nature of the highly advanced "progressive" materials used by the Workers and Farmers Paradise puts all artefacts on a timer to their disillusionment.... very much a human condition.

I pity any Moth* that lives on DDR wool, that is one bug that is going to have a jippy tummy.

*Not that I really pity Moths, if they come to my Rezidency..... they are Liquidated with a progressive zeal normally used for counter revolutionaries by a People's Democratic Republic Internal Security Organ).

Like a People's Democratic Republic you need to keep our Historical Documents/ Scales of Issue under very stable conditions with Internal Security Organ's watching all aspects of the everyday operation in your Storage Facility of State Property, otherwise Internal Economic Wreckers, Counterrevolutionaries and external foreign agencies will work to tear down the Utopia in Dederon we have build in the name of the Workers and Farmers Power.

    Hurrah!, Hurrah!, Hurrah!.

Thanks for the warning, especially for the warning about the decontamination kit!

Yes, this good old socialist plastic is hard to handle. The cushions in my steelhelmets tend to break in little pieces when the softener of the plastic is gone. And no chance to prevent that..

It's a shame, I love moths...They're among the top on my list of "Favorite living things"...Well, my only uniform right now is gabardine, so I'm good. It's safe in my closet, same with my Grenztruppen Hemdbluse...

But my Hemdbluse, like some of my dad's dress shirts, is starting to show its age...Little pieces of string keep popping out of it! Well, it's like 22 years old, so I'm not suprised...Then again my Gesellschaft jacket is 30 years old and it's in perfect condition (my friends think that's amazing for a jacket so old, so do I), save a miniscule stain on one kragenspiegel that was there when I bought it.

You can find all sorts of tunics, even from the very beginning of the NVA (say, 1956) in near-mint condition... It's spectacular :O
And we're lucky to be in this part of the collecting world ^^

              4 letter word

              4 letter word.....

              MICE.....

They didn't get my cabana wear, but they scored some boxed strichtarn a few years back.

I have hung a big bunch of M-65 jackets wrapped in plastic in garage. Suspended on hangers that ride on ex-shovel handle hanging by wire strung to the rafters... this seems to work.

Aside from natural predators and the environment, a lot of NVA gear should have WHMIS data...it just seems to have an adhesive/corrosive decay cycle

What immediately comes to mind is the copious amounts of evil smelling, sticky yellow powder that spilled out of paper packets in my R-105 battery compartment...

Dave, That's a good point. I have a liberal number of mouse traps spread throughout the garage baited with Peanut Butter, which is like catnip to mice. I also used that expanding foam to seal up any cracks or spaces (like around the door frame) that they could get get through to get into the garage. I've also switched from storing things in cardboard boxes to sealed plastic bins which helps with both moths and mice.

Since I've done that I've not had mice in the garage for a couple of years.

I have seen and handled several gabardine uniforms with moth damage, not only on the body of the tunic (a wool blend), but also to the lining and especially the wool piping around the collar and cuffs! Even the wool coloured cap bands on forage caps are tasty to moths.

Make sure any new uniforms you receive is moth egg free buy drycleaning, etc. Store all uniforms in a special closet with plenty of moth balls. Never store moth balls directly on the clothing! I use perforated Glad salad bags, which allows the odour to escape. All my uniforms are stored in sealed suit bags, hats in plastic bags.

For long term storage of uniforms, I use home storage "vacuum" bags, which allows you to remove all the air with a vacuum cleaner. Include a small bag of moth balls.

A few cedar strips are not enough to ward off moths.

Moths also find Grenztruppen wool cuff titles most tasty. I found one small moth nip on my Grenz officer's uniform cufftitle despite liberal application of mothballs in my shrunk in the garage.

Most uniform collectors advise not to use dry cleaning or suit bags for long term storage of uniforms as the plastic deteriorates over time causing off gassing that can damage material and metal. I'm not sure about vacuum bags, I assume that would limit you access to the uniforms. Since I've started to accumulated VM uniform items I've found lidded plastic tubs to be most convenient as they they are easy to access, move and keep most pests out.

                      Genossen,
While my Historic Archive was located at War Store "Dora" Mice were detected and caused minor damaged to a Fj jump Helmet before they were Liquidated.... in the name of the State.

All Scale of Issue now is held in some 58 large heavy duty high impact PVC 60 L Boxes with sealable Lids. or luggage cases.

Garments in Suit/ Greatcoat Bags or Boxes to the above Norm.

War Store "Emil" is a hardened and protected by several additional (still classified) Echelons of Internal Security measures.

I have employed mouse traps, expanding foam and plastic boxes from IKEA with lids that shut tight..

I opened a box recently that was stored in a climate controlled environment. The leatherette brim on two of the womens berets had disintegrated into little black parsley flakes scattered into the box when I picked the berets up.

My women's berets have experienced the same fate, which I'm sure was hastened by the fact that they were in the garage.

                            Genossen,
I fall back on my Nr2 Posting, I accept such " Operational Loses ", to misquota a man with some vision...

"We collect the Scale of Issue of the DDR. in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard".

In that spirit man has walked on the moon, and I've worn NVA Army Shoes that have fallened apart on my feet after wearing the new from the box in under ½ an hour.

Looking at it I think I'm more with

                            The explorer George Mallory..

If asked why I must collect it?, I will answer "Because it is there."

There is a link.... if you wait a bit I will find it.... till then here is a little music... .

Per my discussion of the destructive properties of a decontamination kit. Here is a photo I'd taken of the UTV gas mask I received as part of uniform group last month. Note how the decontamination kit has caused the pocket on the right side of the mask carrier to discolor. The decontamination kit itself is that grey object in the right lower corner of the photo. I've since double bagged it in freezer bags and separated it from the mask. Fortunately the mask and canister were not corroded or damaged like my other mask was.
