The Herder medal was generally given for good Russian language skills and for being active in promoting good relations with our Soviet friends and brothers. I received the Herder Medal in Bronze myself (the blue one for students). Cheers, Torsten.

PS: It was not given out in huge numbers. I was the only one at my school who got it.

Thanks a lot Torsten. What I've said,it is a part off a documents set from a NVA officer.Thats why I bought this set.You don't see them very often, and less for nva members.
I saw in a catalog that this medal was between other DSF pins and medals.
Did you got it because youre Russian language was very good??Was there a special date ore occasions that this medal was given??

I do not recall any specific date for this medal to be awarded, but most were probably given on 8th May. There was no specific reason given for why I received it, but my Russian was fairly good and I was quite active in the Russian language club at school, regularly visited our local Soviet Army garrison for meetings, etc., visited Soviet Army officer families in their homes for social evenings (which was quite fun and interesting really), went to the Soviet Army children school in Magdeburg a couple of times to help with German language lessons there, had penpals in the Soviet Union and went there on student exchange. I was also the FDJ GOL Sekretaer at school (basically the head pupil for the school), which also helped to be a preferred target when it came to being given awards or special favours ... Cheers, Torsten.

Your officer will have been given it for having done something special to promote comradeship with his unit's Soviet Army partner unit or for having been especially good with the Russian language or similar. His award had to be red, because every NVA officer was a fully qualified teacher. My own degree qualification as an Artillery Officer would have been 'Dipl. Ing. paed fuer Maschinenbau' (BEng Hons (with teaching) for Mechanical Engineering), which was basically the qualification required to teach mechanical engineering at College level. Cheers, Torsten.

above the right breast pocket. The only time I ever wore it was for the parade in Berlin. Cheers, Torsten.

                        Hi Stefas,

the blue, green and grey medals were in Bronze, Silber and Gold; but not the red medal, there is only one class, gold-coloured.

                        Uwe
