Cool Snaps

Well spotted, images capture the excitement & momentum of the end of the DDR. And the ambiguity of the NVA, elite soldiers of socialism, with a shoot to kill policy on the Grenz (only Grenztruppen I know). Thankfully the war these lads were trained for never occurred. Photos have the immediancy of the present, incredible, like the photographer's other photos of life too! Very cool.

Great pictures, one question though, why are the AK shown in the picture shown with wood lower handguards as opposed to the bakelite ones that seem to be more common? I was not aware that there was anything else availible or issued. By the way great forum, glad i found it!

not an expert in the fine details of the weapons, but some of us had bakelite and others had wood. my own Kalashnikovs were bakelite. rumour had it, that the ones with wooden handguards were older soviet made kalashnikovs and the bakelite ones were newer east german made guns...but like I say, that was just a rumour among us and i am not really sure what the reasons were for the two different types....probably just different years of manufacture with the wooden ones being the older type... but, which ones you were actually issued with was just potluck and there is no deeper meaning behind it. cheers, torsten.
