    23 Oct. 1956-The Hungarian Uprising

    Gents,

As part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Uprising in 1956 there are many static displays being set up around the city of Budapest (Not to mentione this nights riot where a WW II tank was commandeered by the rioters!). The display I am going to post pictures of took place in front of the Museum now called "The House Of Terror" at 60 Andrassy Ut. Once the Arrow Cross headquarters during WWII and the AVN (Secret Police) from 1948 to 1956. While this is off tpoice for the DDR forum I think the pictures of the vehicles will be of interest to the forum members. There will be other static vehicle dispalys during the week and I'll post pictures of any I think might be of interest to the forum.
There were people in period civilian clothing and military uniforms. I'll post what I think might be of interest.

    Regards,

    Gordon

The building in the background of this picture is The House Of Terror. Along the wall just above head level are pictures of some of those killed. Ia m not sure if they were killed in the uprising or "disappeared" into 60 Andrassy. People have lit candles and laid flowers all along the foot of the wall under the photographs.

I'll end here for the night and post some more pictures tomorrow. I would like to dedicate this htread to all those who have fought tyranny. Especially those who paid the supreme price.

                          Dallasfan,

Yes there are still a couple of monuments left standing in Budapest. There is a monument that has had the worlding removed and the Russian state symbol removed form one side and not the other that seems to be a reference to the end of the war but the place where the letters were is not legible to read. There is a very large statue on top of Gellert Hill, that is visible from almost anywhere in the city, put up by the Russian after the war that used to have a statue of a Russian soldier below it but the soldier has been removed. There is also "Statue Park" where they took all the statues from the communist era. It is open to the public but I have not been there yet.
                          Soviet,
I was going to post this in the Soviet forum to start with but I am unknown over there so decided to do it here for the vehicles. Perhaps I'll start another thread over there and post some additional pictures that I won't be posting here.

                          Regards,

                          Gordon

                            Monuments

                            Hi All!
                            The monument park:
                            http://www.szoborpark.hu/index.php?Lang=en

Andrássy út 60. was the House of Loyalty (Hűség Háza) of the hungarian nazis (Arrowcross Party) till '45, they constructed the prison and torture rooms in the basement, then the ÁVÓ (first State Defence Department-ÁVH, later State Defence Bureau-ÁVH) layed its hand on it. After the revolution in '56 Kádár tried to consolidate the situation so all the "basement prisons" were demolished, filled with cement, the buildings were used by paramilitary organisations (communist youth orgs, railway officials etc).

This is the website of the museum:
                            http://www.terrorhaza.hu/index3.html...ad298b2042e9c4

                            Best regards
                            Tamás
