Thankyou for the great shots of the Police Uniform setup, could you(please) inform me as to the pocket badge as I've never seen this. I have an embryonic DDR collection (accumulation) which I put together in the 90's with many gaps, although some of the items seem a bit on the high side from what I remember them, that is to say the ones up on the E-Stand. This computer thing is very new to me but I am truly thrilled that there are some others out there who have an interest in the DDR period. The photos and text on this particular forum are a pleasure. Apologies for being long winded; I was not aware that there are DDR fakes out there...is it worth someones time to copy this material when in comparison to many other flavours Third Reich etc. this is one of the last bastions of affordability in this entire hobby? Thanks in advance for your patience as my computer skills as yet are rather grim.

the Badge you refer to is an early DDR sports Badge, there has been a recent thread on these with close up pictures.

Here is the set up of Badges on a DVP Tunic(probably a bit too many Badges).
There weren't that many Awards around in the early 50's,so they have usually worn Sport- and FDJ Badges.

I have started a couple of books in the past on Third Reich era collectables but publishing books is a complex, and sometimes expensive, proposition. Most people end up "self publishing" books because they have a limited market. To be really successful the DDR reference books would have to be in at least English and German to appeal to a larger market. CD books aren't the answer because when you want to look something up for reference purposes they don't work well.
All that being said, I plan on starting a book on DDR collectables and hopefully finishing it, while I am in Budapest. I am leaning toward headgear to start with. The existing hat book is a great start but we could do better. I think each section should include at least one picture of a uniform the hat could have been worn with. I am also considering making it a two part book with BRD hats as well. West German hats have not been documented anywhere that I am aware of and lots of people interested in Third Recih and DDR hats are also interested in hats from the BRD. It would also help in identifying BRD hats that are being converted into more expensive DDR hats.

Your idea on a badge book is great. Both sides, the issue box and the urkunde to match would make a great book. You would be the perfect person to write one. Why not do it? I could contribute some info from some of my high end stuff.

You can be asured,I will buy your Book as soon as it comes out ,as I'm quite unhappy with the reference Books so far.Don't get me wrong they good enough to start with and to see what actually exsited..but you soon realise,they do not give enough Informations that are needed.
For Example the Zoller Book for DDR Headgear,has some great and rare Hat Photos in it(even in Color) but IMO not much of Informations regarding the Construction,Material and Timeframes.Also the way it is written is to confusing.It should have a Photo(Front,Side and Inside) and next to the Photo a short Description about Construction,Material,Variations,Timeframe etc. I mean it sounds easy but is proably a hell of work to do so.
Me making a Reference Book about Medals is a Honour to hear from a Advanced and experienced Collector like you Gordon.But I just haven't got enough Medals/Bagdes yet to start such Project and to be honest,I wouldn't even know where and how to start.

Interesting on this Photo is..he's wearing what I blieve to be a de-nazified Belt Buckle.

Your right about the buckle, looks like what was a 2 piece construction buckle that has had the top disk removed, the photo looks late 40's judging by the lady's fashion and the height of the cap crown. I wouldn't be suprised if this guy was in the police during the TR period, damn shame this photo isn't in colour I think it would give away even more secrets....

Thankyou fellows so much for the link to the early sports badges, this is the first that I have seen of them, these discussions certainly answer a myriad of questions that an enthusiast would have. Is ther anyone that can be recommended in DDR material for purchasing - I've seen the odd bit here and there but most seems to be of the surplus store variety with put together sets of boards and insignia, I have what appears to be a set of fold-out wall posters of uniforms and insignia produced for use of the East German Military is there a sight or thread that shows the vast majority of awards and decorations? Thanks in advance for your help.

The following is specific to the DDR and is a representation of both State and NVA awards and decorations as well as some of the civil organizations too.

Caution: Although for the most part the awards/decorations are shown in order of precedence, there may be some variance depenedent upon the source being used, or the individual actually wearing the decorations. But I think generally this will help.

I hope others will provide you with additional sources. Books perhaps are the best source, and there is a thread on the Forum about the different books that are recommended, which encompasses some good ones covering awards and decorations, as well as uniforms of the NVA.
