The Bw insignia collectors are aware of the oval Fallschirmjäger and Gebirgsjäger cloth insignia that were worn on the upper right sleeve as branch insignia from 1957 until 1962.
This is the typical single white bordered Edelweiss on lighter green base material worn by enlisted personnel then. Variants embroidered on darker green cloth can be found as well.
Recently I found a similar one with a single red border:
From what I do know it looks like a vintage patch. For sure the red border is NOT a subsequently colorized white one.
In 1962 the today known Verbandsabzeichen were introduced. A silver/black, white, red and yellow border was added for the Division's HQ/units and the first, second and third brigade of the Gebirgsdivision.
So what did I find here? A manufacturer's error or maybe a specimen for the red bordered cloth insignia of Gebirgsjägerbrigade 23? Any info would be highly appreciated.
