Crop out the personnel in berets and one would be hard-pressed to distinguish the era in which the photo was taken.
It almost looks like these guys are carrying WW1 M1898s and not the customary Kar 98ks. It may just be that the position of "shoulder arms" is making the rifles look longer. The distinctive notch in the butt for the sling confirms that these are 98ks.
