    Breadbag Reference Thread

I thought, that maybe we should start thread about West German breadbags, to put together infos about them and post examples in one place. This idea could be done for other equipments, if enough interest (canteens, messkits, etc.).

The West German Brotbeutel are modification of the Model 31 used by the Wehrmacht and various police organisations. The West German breadbags have pointed belt loop ends and internal divider, that is not present in WW2 version. The very late versions (1970s-80s, when almost not issued) have riveted construction and cloth or leather reinforcement around flap. I have only seen these for THW and BGS.

So far, colours that are known (feel free to add/correct):
    - dark green: BGS (mid 1950s-1970s), very early BGS is greygreen colour almost, but hard to determine - here is one in collection of BGS veteran, that is supposedly stamped BGS 1954, interesting, because early BRD articles not stamped very well often and riveted d-rings (repair?):
    http//www.bgs13-coburg1959.de/Kapp/media/Brotbeutel01.jpg
    - mossgreen: late BGS (1970s-80s)

    - bluegreen/green: various Bereitschaftspolizeien (not sure which - most?)
    - greygreen: Schleswig-Holsteiner Polizei
    - blue: Berliner Polizei (from mid/late 1950s)

    - tan/khaki: early ZB/THW
    - bluegrey: later ZB/THW and possibly BLSV?

I will start the posting with breadbags in my collection. On left is BGS breadbag from late 1950s or early 60s (unstamped) in unissued condition. Middle breadbag is unknown in olive or greygreen colour, I bought it from ebay.de. I suspect S-H, but not sure? Probably not early BGS, like I hoped. On right is faded breadbag that I bought at Flohmarkt in Bonn a couple years ago. Leather is low quality, compared to others. Could be 1950s BGS or Bepo (NRW?). Stamps are faded and hard to read. Only one, that I have strap for.

Inside of breadbags. Nothing unusual, except right one, has pebbled brown leather straps to close it, look not so good as others, which have smoothleather black straps.

    Regards
    Klaus

        Good Morning Klaus,

your pale green breadbag in the mid of your pictures might be from a Landes-Bereitschaftspolizei. I know such a color was used e.g. from Rheinland-Pfalz and Schleswig-Holstein.

The BGS breadbag on the left might be from the 70s, before the BGS also switched to the Moosgruen color of the Landespolizei uniforms. In general you can say there were two different versions of this breadbag style after WW2.
The 1st version was smaller and a bit more round, like your bags on the right. 2nd version was bigger and of a more straight cut.
The 1st version was in production for different organisations from the 1950s on till the late 60s I think. Your dating of the second version from 70s to 80s might be correct.

The THW breadbag uscob linked also is the 2nd version. From around 1986 to 1988 the Bundesamt fuer Zivilschutz (federal agency for civil protection / defence) ordered lots of new breadbags of this late style. Also canteens and messkits. Most of this never were used.

Here you can find the two colors used by the LSHD and THW in the early years.

Oh, I forgot. The BLSV used blue breadbags, colored like their uniforms.

The Landeskatstrophenschutz of Rheinland-Pfalz used breadbags in the same color the Bereitschaftspolizei did:

The following breadbag or Kleine Kampftasche was used in the late 50s and early 60s by the German Bundeswehr:

            Simon,
nice collection! Your contributions fill a few spaces in my knowledge. So you think that my BGS breadbag on left is probably early 1970s based on the larger cut of flap, or?

Not really a thread about canteens, but: in Rheinland-Pfalz, was the Bw type "HRE canteen" used by Bepo and KatS? You show them together in the photos, so only curious. I know that BGS had their own canteen of this type, and if Länder had them, I would think this style? Here is own from my collection.

              Hello Klaus,

Yes, indeed Rheinland-Pfalz ordered HRE canteens in Bundeswehr style to stuff the Landes-Bereitschaftspolizei. When establishing the Landeskatastrophenschutz this units got their breadbags, canteens and messkits from the Landespolizei.

                Simon,
Thanks for the explanation. When you have more infos or photos about Rheinland-Pfalz Bereitschaftspolizei in 1950s-60s, I would be interested to see them. In another thread of course, so this one remains about breadbags. It is hard to find much about individual Bepo units of the various Länder or their equipments.

                Regards
                Klaus
