    BGS helmet

    Hallo
Here's one of my German border guards helmet.
Known as BGS helmets, made and used after ww2.
This is a later model whitout rivets.
I dont know when and why it was overpainted.
But on the inside is the factory colour still presented, typical police green.

    Best regards
    Gulli

        Hi Gulli ,

        Nice BGS helmet !
The chinstrap is a little unusual because of it`s brown colour.
Any markings that you can see on the leather ?

        Regards

        Bernhard

Gulli - Here's a couple from my collection. The green one is a field re-painted BGS model; the factory painted gray one was used by the West Berlin Bereitschaftspolizei.

I think the BGS model was hastely repainted at some point either by the BGS or surplus dealer to enhance its re-sale value before it was put on the market.

The gray one, as previously indicated, was factory painted for issue to the West Berlin paramilitary police force. Does your exterior coat look like it was factory applied?

Bernhard brings up a good point about the brown chin strap. Perhaps this was a BGS helmet modified by a World War II re-enactor to resemble a wartime Luftwaffe or Kriegsmarine model.

            All the best - TJ

              Hallo
I think you are correct regarding its new colour.
And the strap is not marked.
And the paint have been brushed on, not in a factory.

              Best regards

              Gulli

                Manufacturers of these helmets

                Hi gents,

Interesting thread, thanks for info. I have a M53 helmet with LS 64 makers marked stamped in rear skirt.
Please can you assist with manufacturers details of these post war helmets.
I am led to belive that QUIST manufactured the bulk of these, is this correct?

                  Spencer,

The LS mark is the trademark of the Linnemann&Schnetzer Company from
                  Ahlen.
They also had a contract for making the german version of the M1 helmet.

                  Hope this helps.

                  Regards

                  Bernhard

Linnemann und Schnetzer made many M53 helmets for Polizei units, especially Berlin Bereitschaftspolizei.
