TJ, I prefer this book. All 775 pages! I highly recommend it. Check the reviews on this book.

There is a tremendous shortage of German history books available in English. Once in a while you find one amoung the 'Nazi this and that', 'Hitler this and that', etc. Others are just filled with postwar Western conventional wisdom biases.

Here is an interesting article which touches upon Clark's work: http://www.goethe.de/ges/mol/typ/en3182928.htm

But this book describes only Prussia - not whole Germany.

My enthusiasm for Prussia is limited, althoug i admit that this state was more complex than most of the prejudices would suggest.

My ancestors fought nearly 200 years in alliance with Austria and Bavaria against Prussia - and they finally lost.
I for myself believe that german History in the 20th century had turned out much better if they had prevailed.

Next I guess I will hear that the Prussians supported the Nazis more than the Austrians and Bavarians did. Unfortunately, postwar German politics contributed greatly to the 'prejudices'. I guess I will go no further, as I will undoubted venture into a 'forbidden' forum discussion.

The seminal catastrophe of the 20th century is World War I. And without prussian dominance over germany and without this intellectually challenged Hohenzollern Kaiser it had not happend in this form.

Well folks, I think we have just answered the question as to why soldiers of the Bundeswehr are such 'Schlagsahne Soldaten'.

Ah, I've been meaning to buy this book, but haven't gotten around to it yet. This discussion here has prompted me to finally buy it.

As for the Prussia/Germany topic.....As LuckyStrike23 said, "..But this book describes only Prussia - not whole Germany...". While most of Prussia's history occurred before 1871 (year of German unification), I believe it can reasonably be said that Prussia dominated the political and military life of the new Germany from 1871 until the end of WWI (and to a lesser degree from 1919 to 1933, the Weimar years), so after 1871 Prussia's history can be said to intertwine with Germany's history.

I am looking forward to reading this book.
