Interesting visit at the Wachbataillon des BMVg

Yesterday I visited the S-1 of the Wachbat. at the former Herman Goering Kaserne now the Julius Leber Kaserne and saw the Traditions Room. As Nicolas von Möllendorff I was able to see the Honourable Sword of General Carl von Möllendorff, given by his men for 50 Years of Service in 1854 with a solid golden Handle swith silver wire and added figures. Burried in 1945 in Potsdam by the last CO of the IR 9 it was found in the Early 90's after the reunification and restored for many Years and then handed over to the WB. There are also some Pics and Paintings of General Field Marshal Joachim von Möllendorff who took Leuthen from the Austrians as a Captain in the Army of Frederic the II and won many other Battles. In 1806 he was promoted to Governor of Berlin. Next week Im there Again and hope to take some Pics.
the Sword was given to him as the Commander of the First Guards Regiment in Potsdam and after a long period missing, found in 1932 and then used by the commander of the IR 9. Now hold by the Guards Regiment of the Bundeswehr in the old traditions of German Armies.

Nico - Are you related to the famous general? Did you know his sword was there?

In any event, it sounds like you had a wonderful visit. I hope you get some photos during your next visit. It's good to know that the Bundeswehr is preserving it's history. That sword has had quite an interesting journey; it deserves its own book or TV show

    All the best - TJ

Yes, both are members of the "Family-tree". The General Field Marshal and the General.
My Great grandfather was from 1901-3 in Kamerun. Up to Aug. 02 Commander of the Semikore Military Post and from Jan. 03 Commander for the Jaunde and Ebolowa Stations.

Very nice to know that the old traditions are hanging in there and will hopefully re-emerge themselves in the bundeswehr for years to come.
