BGS Canteen

Hi,

Although I am pretty sure the BundesGrenzSchutz were not issued these kind of canteens, the color on it looks like a BGS green. It does not appear to be re-painted. The canteen is labeled PSL72 and the top cup is labeled PSL73.

Were they ever issued these or is the color just specific to the manufacturer of this canteen?

yes it exist this BW type canteen for BGS, but not think were issued. Same with the last model riveted breadbags with leather edging - seem to be only stockpiled and never issued. 80s training/exercise photos still show the older gear, so it seem older stocks were never really exhausted.

Interesting that the canteens were made the BGS but never issued? I can't quite fathom that the government would spend that much money and not use them.

simple - it was planned to use and was not. Governments make often extra equipment and of course with expectation to issue it, but for various reasons this sometimes not happen. Older items probably lasted longer than expected and BGS trained less often in the field later in 80s, so most of these items were not needed after combattant status of BGS was eliminated in 1994. Is only theory, because i have not seen it in photos and most look unissued, but is possible a few were issued. This model has been posted on here before.
