The National Archives hold two documents contain Field Force Unit numbers (one from 1942 the other from 1944)and these have recently been used to identify the 30946 sometimes found stamped on 1st pattern F-S knives as being the number for 9 Commando.
However I am trying to search out the meaning of A839644. This has been found on two knives made by Cogswell and Harrison which were reputed to have been made for the RM and other Special Forces.
So is this a Field Force Unit number or some other unit indicator. Any help in identifying appreciated.
