    New book from Lawrence Patterson.

One of two recent books from Lawrence Patterson
"U-Boat War patrol" The Hidden photographic Diary of U-564.
ISBN 1-85367-575-X ( Greenhill Books London and Stackpole Books , Pennsylvania).

This book is a positive Goldmine of previously never seen before photographs captured by a war correspondent who was sent on a patrol with Teddy Suhren's U-564 in the Summer of 1942, a patrol which took 564 to the warm waters of the Caribbean.

The photographs are fantastic , and bring to mind Buchiem's " U-Boat War" for a wealth of interior and exterior photographs showing the day to day life on a U-Boat from the cramped dirty conditions endured by the crew ,the everyday tasks to keep her in fighting trim to the chase and inspection of a neutral merchant man.
Resupply from a U-boat tanker U-463 ( Leo Wolfbauer) is well documented an experience U-564 shared with U-129( Hans-Ludwig Witt).

The book captures something of the magic personality of Teddy Suhren and his relationship with his crew who held him in deep respect and admiration.

The author says much about Suhren , a man who was at times at odds with authority , and at one time under the eye security services for his outspoken comments.

The text which details the patrol is detailed and reads very easily , fully marks to the author for his writing style which flows well and is never dry.
The chapters are reinforced by accurate concise notes on a chapter to chapter basis , all sources are listed- its obvious that to regard this a "Photographic Diary" alone is something of an understatement , a considerable amount of research went into writing the book which is the equal of a " lost shoe box of photographs" which went home in a soldiers kit bag and remained undisturbed for almost 60 years.
These "lost photographs" form the basis for this fine book, they are now part of the Submarine Museum ( Gosport) collection ,with which the author has close ties.

Well produced and presented. Excellent !!

Published by Greenhill Books (Uk) and Stackpole Books ( USA) this is a really excellent book which is highly recommended.

Also worth a look " Hitler's Grey Wolves - U-Boats in the Indian Ocean" ( Greenhill Books) ISBN 1-85367-615-2.
    (Stackpole publishers , USA).
( I have not read this book in full , but I like what I have had time to read so far )
