Hi - My first book review
This book is written by Peter Haran who served in Vietnam from 67-68 with 2nd RAR attached to a combat tracking team.
The book primarily deals with 3 people : 1 pilot & 2 door gunners who flew converted Iroquois helicopters made into gunships with the 9th RAAF squadron.
The RAAF had 4 of these code named Bushrangers & they were used to support the ground infantry during offensives as well as protect other helicopters picking up wounded etc.
Not a bad book that follows the 3 vets through their tour & also their experiences post war & the effects that it had on them when they returned. As with the US vets, Australians didnt want to know them & the RSL ( Returned Soldiers League ) also did not accept them when they returned.
A different book for me to read as I am 99.9 % WWII, but am happy to have read it, as it has broadened my horizons.
Peter has also written 3 other books :
Trackers: The untold story of the dogs of war
Crossfire: An Australian reconnaissance unit in Vietnam
Flashback : Echos from a hard war
Which I will be getting when the funds allow
Not a bad read - indeed
