My wife and I have also been watching the show and have enjoyed it very much, there are some errors, but I still like the show. I am having my students watch the show and most seem to enjoy it.

Were the Germans later abandoned by the High Command, left to fend for themselves?

I read somewhere that the Germans suffered bad food shortages aswell towards in the last few months and were more or less left to fend for themselves, though they allowed the civilians the Red Cross parcels that did get through. Though I also read of a civilian youth who saw his pet cat being stolen by soldiers from his garden. He gave chase to find it being beheaded prior to being cooked, I hear cat is quite greasy!
