The Great Escape - in Canada: Capt. Franz von Werra

Recently the "Ottawa Citizen" published an article about a German POW who escaped from the train that was shipping German POW's to a remote camp near Thunder Bay, Ontario in January 1941. The enterprising German fighter pilot jumped from a window on the train, into the snow. He managed to make his way to Johnstown, Ontario, and then across the St. Lawrence River to the then neutral United States. You can read the article by following this link.

...and made into a movie in the 50's, "The One That Got Away", and it still holds up as a good movie today. (it was done in Black & White).

        Hi,

Hardy Kruger (an SS soldier during WW2) took the lead role in the movie "The One That Got Away" in 1957.
It was a UK produced movie of the exploits of Franz von Werra, a Luftwaffe pilot who was the only German POW to escape from captivity and return to Germany to serve again in the armed forces.
Unfortunately for von Werra, he was shot down in Russia and killed, I believe MIA; but he never reappeared.
I believe the British are probably the only country who make movies about heroes of our enemies, "A Bridge Too Far" being another prime example of an epic being made about a great defeat.
Whilst "The One That Got Away" is now readily available in the UK now, ironically, I had to buy a copy in Germany several years ago under the title "Einer Kam Durch" because a UK release was not available at the time!
A good movie, well worth watching.

        Best wishes,

        John.
