    Hi,

Bought this on DVD in 2006, as a double-bill with "Before The Raid" a propaganda short film about the occupation of Norway, which was produced in 1943; "Lili" being made in 1944.
Most British people of a certain age recognise "Lili Marlene" as one of the very few outstanding "hits" of the war years, most not realizing that it is of German origin.
Incidentally, Rhino Records in the USA produced a four CD box set of covers of "Lili Marlene" (99 in total a recall) many years ago; I think I would find that a bit extreme though!
This song is the official song of the Eighth Army, "The Desert Rats" who fought the Afrika Korps, then invaded Italy; before being sent to Germany as the war ended.

    Best wishes,

    John.

The German 3rd Recon Bn adopted "Lili" in 1940 before the Blitz through France. When this unit was sent to Afrika in Feb '41 as part of the original DAK is when it was first heard world wide on the Belgrade radio station. No coincidence either.....becoming the DAK swan song.

Most of the 8th Army versions are quite uncomplimentary and humorous

It used to be "our" song for years, till she figured out it's about abit of bad luck
