    Operation Salam by Kuno Gross

    Posting on behalf of my friend in New Zealand:

    Bob

    Would you mind posting a piece of text for me on the WA Forum in the section where people discuss books?

    A good friend of mine, Kuno Gross, has just released his wonderful account of Operation Salam, the placing of two German spies in Cairo in the Summer of 1942, delivered to a railway station on the Nile by a convoy of German-operated captured British vehicles that drove all the way from Agedabia in Libya, and back again.

    Here is a link to Kuno's website that people can look at,

    I received my advance copy by airmail from Kuno today. It is a very very good book. I am really impressed.

    Last week a great new book written on placing two Abwehr spies in Cairo in the summer of 1942, "Operation Salam", was released in Europe. This is both a straight history of the operation and a photographic record of the time and places connected with the mission through a "then and now" format. The book is co-authored by long time DAK researcher and collector Kuno Gross with Michael Rolke and Andras Zboray. The book has been nearly ten years in the making and the research to put it together has been been meticulous and wide ranging. It contains much new information, as well as many photos taken on the mission not seen before. The subtitle for the book is, "László Almásy’s most daring Mission in the Desert War".The narrative is in many ways focused around this amazing man- Hungarian nobleman, desert explorer, archaeologist, adventurer, and spy. This is a large book, beautifully produced, full of never before seen photos, old and modern, charts, documents and ephemera. I know about it because a good friend in NZ had a hand in helping to produce the book (and helped me write this piece). The book is available from bookshops in Germany at 48 Euro or GBP45.00 in the UK.

    The publisher is a German firm based in Munich, Belleville Verlag Michael Farin, and the ISPN number is 978-3-943157-34-5. The book is published in English. You can check out the book on Kuno's website;

    If you have an interest in the North African campaign, especially as seen from the German side, this might be one title you need to have on your book shelf. In case you do not know what Operation Salam was it was the placing in Cairo of two German spies by the Abwehr in the early summer of 1942. The two spies, Johannes Eppler and Hans-Gerd Sandstede, were safely delivered to a railway station on the Nile by a convoy of German-operated captured British vehicles commanded by Almásy that drove all the way from Agedabia in Libya, and back again. It is an epic story.
