BEST book on SS cloth insignia

Hi fellas: in your opinion, what is the BEST, most comprehensive, best illustrated (with photos- not line drawings), most comparative (showing the
differences between originals and fakes) book on SS (mainly Waffen SS)
    cloth insignia (including cuff titles)?

    Ernst,

That book has yet to be written and published. There are a number of books that cover certain aspects..cufftitles being one of them by Ulric of England. He has done a marvelous job at disecting the cufftitles and how they compare to reproductions in weave, material etc. I understand that Mike beaver is/was working on a SS cloth insignia book but still not published. For my money and what was and still is my bible of collecting is Angolia's Cloth SS insignia book. If my library was burning down and I had only one book to save...that would be the one.

      Greg,
You grab that book and I'll run in and grab your collection!
That would be enough 'reference' for me!

Seriously, angolias book is very good, as is unlrichs on CTs, also robins book on ss regalia, and beavers book on uniforms. But seeing real stuff in person is the best thing you can do.

I agree...I like Ulric's two volumes....he shows detailed shots of most of the commonly encountered SS bands..and some SA bands etc...and you really can't go wrong by studying the pix...he even shows some re-pops...as far as I know it has no mistakes.

          Ernst,

I would second Greg’s and John’s recommendations, and add these 2:

Andrew Mollo’s “Uniforms of the SS Volume 7, Waffen SS Badges & Unit Distinctions". It is about 30 years old, but, along with the other 6 volumes, probably the best overall work. Not as many photos as in the later books, but loaded with information taken from the original SS records and regulations.

Gordon Williamson‘s and Thomas McGuirl‘s “German Military Cuffbands“ - about ½ of the book is devoted to SS cuff titles.

The latter, along with Ulric‘s books, do show some reproductions, but the best reference to see the differences between originals/fakes is right here on this forum .

          Regards,

          Fred

            Hi folks,
Although Angolia's book on SS cloth insignia would be my number one choice. I would also consider Gordon Williamson's book on Military cuffbands and A. Hayes book on SS Uniforms, Insignia & Accoutrements.

Re - Angola's "Cloth Insignia of the SS" - try and get hold of the 2nd Edition of this book. It has corrections and additions section at the rear of the book. I too agree that if I had to have one book, this would be it.

                  Cheers,
                  Ray.

Now if I was REALLY naughty I would have suggested you read it before you put it on ebay....fortunately I'm not naughty. AND by the way the word is 'insignia' NOT 'decails' it can't just be me that goes up the wall when you keep saying that (but I do know English may not be your 1st language )

                    Cheers,Ian.

Angola's "Cloth Insignia of the SS" - the 2nd Edition?

I have A. Hayes book on SS Uniforms, Insignia, & Accoutrements, and Beavers 3 set addition on SS Uniforms.

Where does one find a copy of, Angolia's "Cloth Insignia of the SS" - the 2nd Edition?

                      thanks, Al R

Probably on eBay, or you can try a listing under wanted on the e-stand.
It's been out of print for some time.

There are a lot of books dealing with the ss, if i did not have a library of material and had just started then i would say, there are not in any order,

cloth insignia of the ss 2nd ed, this is a book that has been used by many easy to carry around to shows if you need to,

Mike beavers Uniforms of the waffen-ss there are 3 volumes out at this time and Mike say's the other will start to coming out in the new year 2005, when this set is complete it will be a MUST have set.

Andrew mollo's 7 volume set they have reprinted this but not vol. 7

Cuffbands by Gordon williamson, vol.1 volume 2 will be out at a later date

Ulric woodams book on the cuff titles these are a 2 vol. set.

There are many more books out there but this is just a start
                          cheers,
                          Gary

                            SS cloth books

Hi Ernst, another book that I found great is Uniforms, Organization, and History Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler by Stan Cook and R. James Bender out of print but still available. Also Waffen SS Commanders by Mark Yerger has great close ups of officers and their insignia. The more books that you buy the better documentation you have that helps you. Lots of Luck and remember to go slow. Sonny
