I thought George Neill's book Infantry Soldier was great. It's an American soldier's personal account of his training beginning in 1943, and subsequent combat experience during the Battle of the Bulge. The author was a rifleman with L Company, 395th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division. His unit defended the town of Hofen in Germany. The book infuses stories from other soldiers in the same division stationed in different areas, like Elsenborn Ridge and Lanzerath.
I'm a newbie when it comes to military history, but this book was easy for me to understand. I'd recommend it. It's on Google Books, so you can sample a few pages online. Sadly, the author just passed away last month, in August.
