    Hitler's Lost Sub

    Hello everyone!

I just wached a great documentary last night that I wanted to go ahead and recommend to everyone. It's titled Hitler's Lost Sub, and it's based on a bestselling book called Shadow Divers. The documentary is a two-hour PBS NOVA production which tells the story of a German U-boat found sunk off the coast of New Jersey, 230 feet below the Atlantic. It's a fascinating two hours of viewing, not like many of your more typical, somewhat stuffy, stilted reviews of the repeated history you already know. This one chronicles the exploration and research of the sunken U-Boat over a period of years. The documentary includes excellent, clear footage of the sub in its final resting place, a nice tour of one of the few remaining museum-kept U-Boats, a history of submarine development (beginning with the very earliest "Turtle" type), period German war footage I've not seen before, and specific U-Boat technical information. The whole process is like a CSI investigative episode in which the explorers solve various mysteries step by step with recovered clues, trips to Germany, and various twists and turns along the way. Questions include which U-Boat it was, why was it there, what was it's mission, and how was it sunk? The answers will surprise you, and I'm quite sure that you'll enjoy it. Even if you're not exactly into U-Boats, it's worth the two hours. If you check it out, let me know what you think. It's available on DVD from most anyplace that provides comprehensive selections.

This is the documentary that got me started collecting TR militaria. Searching through the wreck they pull out this handful of grease and crud and inside is shiny EKII perfectly preserved by the wax paper and packet.

Yes. This documentary is definitely strong enough to recruit some new collectors. No doubt.

I watched this documentary on UK TV in 2001 (I think?) when it was first aired on our screens.

In my opinion this is one of the best WWII documetaries I have seen. Meticously researched and very well presented, the programme unravelled the mystery of the particular U-Boot perfectly.

For myself, the highlight was input of Horst bredow at the U-Boot Achive, the drive and dedication of this man to record all Kreigsmarine U-Boot operations is quite simply amazing.

I strongly recommend this for anyone to watch.

            Regards Richard.
Always looking for Luftwaffe Kampfflieger related document groups. In particular anything to Kampfgeschwader 2.

Just watched it. Very entertaining! I knew I recognized those divers. They had their own show on the History Channel for a few years. Thank you for the recommendation.

                    Richard,

I agree that the input of Horst Bredow at his U-boat archive is quite a highlight of the show, for sure. It is amazing to imagine the work this man has done to amass such information. The value of this as a resource is priceless.

                        Hi, Eric:

I got mine from a local bookstore--Barnes & Noble. However, you can get it from Amazon.com, as well. I saw it listed on there, just a few days ago.

                              Lost Sub

Great Movie starts slow then drags you in and hold you tight. Loved it. Also had the pleasure of meeting Horst two weeks ago, lovable Old Sea Dog still going strong. He was wounded by an air attack on his boat so he was recuperating when his Boat was sunk.
