I just came across this new work which describes the astonishing mission of a 10-man team of military personnel and CIA who infiltrated North Korea in 1951, in order to assess the likelihood of the war developing into WWIII complete with nukes.
After receiving some additional training, the team was taken up the east coast of Korea via submarine, just north of the 38th parallel. Disguised as survivors of a downed B-29 crew, complete with false identities and cover stories, they made a rendezvous with Chinese Nationalists disguised as Chinese Communist soldiers, complete with stolen T-34's, posing as their captors. The team was to collect intelligence along the way.
The mission evidently when to sh!t at some point and the author (who went on to retire as a LTC) was the only survivor. After the mission became recently declassified, he decided to write this book.
If true, it's a fascinating story. My only gripe is that it's "ghost written". I'd prefer to read it in the author's own words.
