"God willing, we can save Europe from total destruction"

It seems to me they are taking the slant of a brave few trying to save the world from evil.

As opposed to the real version where a few people saw the war was being lost and did what they could to save their skins. They were worried about Germany, not everyone else. Smacks of Hollywood IMO

Oh really! Just saving their skins?

      Hello Jono,

Operation Valkyrie was much more complicated then any "Hollywood version". There were many people involved, some directly and many more peripherally.

The German resistance to Hitlerism predated the "seizure of power" in 1933.

Many Officers, especially the younger ones we taken with National Socialism in the beginning because the first few years the NS Government got Germany working again.

Few people realize that Germany's GOVERNMENT ISSUED money and barter agreements signed on behalf of German industry (by the Reichbank) with foreign governments brought about an economic miracle from 1933-38.

While the US, Britain and Europe with their fiat currencies and foreign owned central banks were unable to recover from the depression Germany was leaving them in the dust.

Politically, Hitler, won through diplomacy, negotiation and brinkmanship many of the things German lost at Versailles in 1919.

Most Germans were appalled by the events of November, 1938 and Goebbels was nearly fired for his role in it.

Hitlers handling of the Sudetenland crisis made him many enemies, among them General Ludwig Beck - a true German patriot is ever there was one.

To paint all these highly decorated patriots as "merely" wanting to save their skins does them, and history a disservice.

Desperate times called for desperate measures.

Col von Stauffenberg also had a personal stake in the success of Operation Valkyrie.

His sister-in-law was Jewish and a pilot for the Luftwaffe, only the second woman in Germany to hold the rank of "Flugkapitan". Hannah Reitsch was the other.

During operation flying here aircraft was attacked and she was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class on January 22, 1943. Read more about her here:

      Melitta Schenk Gräfin von Stauffenberg

Also be sure to Google these names:

      Adam von Trott zu Solz

      General Ludwig Beck

      Karl Gordeler

      Julius Leber

      Wilhelm Canaris

All were good decent men who risk not only their own lives, but those of their families.

Real History shows that the biggest impediment to an early negotiated end to WW2 in Europe (and Japan) was FD Roosevelts policy of "Unconditional Surrender". This illogical and ill thought policy cost hundreds of thousands of allied lives.

Can you explain why they didn't act until such a late date?
Why these people held high positions in the military yet didn't act until 1944?
Stauffenberg was a very patriotic person, as were a lot of the Prussian aristocrats. This patriotism is exactly my point. His interest was in Germany. He wasn't involved in the resistance until late in the war when Germany was losing

In case i got this wrong, correct me, but it sounds to me that you would have preferred a negotiated peace in Europe that would leave a Nazi government still in power. You know who cost hundreds of thousands of allied lives? Hitler. And with a negotiated peace he would have still been in power. You really want that?
Roosevelt's policy made perfect sense and really was the only way to end it. Nazism had to be cut out, cut out cleanly and completely.

            Another attempt made in 1943

Quickly, a few anecdotes / comments:

First, von Staffenberg was NOT a Prussian.

In 1943 von Schabendorf planned managed to load two bombs on Hitlers Aircraft just before his return from a visit to the Eastern Front. Both failed.

I believe the Abwehr provided the explosives from captured British SOE stocks.

A negotiated settlement would have left Britain empire intact (today they are merely a vassal state of the US banking industry).

The NS Regime and the Soviet Union would have been locked into a "forever war" and fought themselves to exhaustion. America could have still made a fortune selling weapons and munitions to BOTH sides.

"Unconditional surrender" violated nearly 3 centuries of European tradition.

It is inherently counterproductive and leaves the enemy no choice but to fight until the bitter end.

The "Unconditional surrender" actually made it much harder for the German resistance to overthrow the NS regime because the German military was aware of allied plans to dismember Germany, dismantle their entire industry and ethnically cleanse nearly 1/4 of the country.

[ Nazism had to be cut out, cut out cleanly and completely.]

At the cost of allowing the Soviet Union into the heart of Europe? What about the genocide of the baltic peoples? The Soviet Death camps in Poland and Eastern Germany?

By 1933 the Bolsheviks in the USSR had already exterminated 25 million people. By 1953 the communist body count amounted to nearly 66 Million (mostly Christian & Muslim) dead.

Whole classes of people (farmers, the middle class, clergy) were exterminated.

Soviet war criminals HAVE NEVER BEEN PUNISHED for their crimes against humanity. Indeed many now live in Russia, the US and Israel quite comfortably.

Anyway, I am looking forward to this film.

            BTW - several other names to Google;

Arthur Nebe (SS - Police General)

            Count von Helldorf (Polizei-Prasadium Berlin)

Both were also involved with July 20th.

            Sincerely,

            Diane

My comment was that Stauffenberg was not a member of the resistance until 1944, i'm aware there were other assassination attempts on Hitler.

The Soviets would have defeated the Germans, no ever lasting war. It would have taken longer if the western allies withdrew in 1944 but the Russians would have still won. Unconditional surrender gives two options, fight until the bitter end or surrender, they chose to fight until the end.

A coup was only possible during the chaos of war. If a partial surrender had been announced then the coup would not have succeeded, leaving a Nazi government still in power.

Of course the Soviets have never been tried for war crimes. Neither have the western allies. The winner always gets off. By pursuing the unconditional surrender, the Western Allies were able to continue capturing German territory and deny it to the Russians. More territory fell to the the Western Allies because of this policy

                Ah Ha!

So the Ami's jumped into bed with Joseph Stalin to defeat Hitler. Hmmm America was allied with the greatest Murderer of the Century to defeat that bad Mr. Hitler and give away half of Europe for 70 years to Communism. And I will not mention bombing Western Culture into oblivion. Maybe not the smartest of moves.
