Stalingrad battle - 3D Mamaev Kurgan B&W Preview

As some of you may know, I have been working on a 3D model of the city of Stalingrad as it appeared in the fall of 1942. With the aid of numerous museums, archives, and private collectors from Russia, Germany, and the USA this project is all coming together.

This model is true 1/1 scale and the topography was created with 2-foot contour lines from maps of Stalingrad from the 1930’s and 1940’s. 13,282 buildings are reflects in the shown area and this is about 10% of the overall 3D project. This is a first pass model and many details still need to be added, refined and expand on. All modeling was created with AutoCAD and 3D Studio Max.

The following four pictures (1024 x 768) are animated GIF’s (4 MB each), so make sure your web browser is set to view them.

Russ - Interesting project you are doing and sorry for not seeing your thread much sooner to provide comments.

First thanks for taking the time to post the images. Second are you doing this professionally or as a hobby???

What is your goal when you finish your project? Will you be depicting forces on the ground in and around Stalingrad? Sorry for so many questions, I just find your project interesting...thanks again for posting...

I know that these images represent a lot of research and a ton of work. Are these images the raw renders of the same ones on the website that you reference? Those have a really realistic look in color. Did you also do all the armor on this other site? I really like the AVI shorts and the day by day reference is superb. The site is awesome with some great links too. Well done.

              Many thanks / Stalingrad 3D

Many thanks; I am very happy the way it has turned out so far. It was an ideal that I had over 20 years and about 3 years ago and it all started to come together.

First, I am creating an interactive tourist and classroom presentation in Russian, German, and English for the Panoramic Museum in Volgograd. It will be a computer based presentation covering both Russian and German forces from the battle including leader and individuals, weapons and tactics, Lightly touching on the German advance to Stalingrad, Heavily covering the day-by-day street and factory fighting period of the battle and again lightly touching on the Russian counter-attack and the reduction of the Stalingrad pocket. Other items will include famous and surviving landmarks and buildings, the history of the city and Stalingrad in the news, magazines, games, and other types of media.

Secondly, it is been created for the next great Stalingrad documentary to be made. I have been showing off parts of my models and presentation over the last three years at museums, gaming conventions and military shows. At the 2006 SOS (Show of Shows international military show), it was such a success that I had a presentation on my laptop at 11:00 night for 20 people. Last year the History Channel and a private video production company contacted me about my project and animations but sadly, I had to tell them it is not complete and I could not give them a firm time frame.

Thirdly and finally, and this is the one I am most enthusiastic about, is the possibly of a computer based military simulation game. Something like an updated to Avalon Hill/Atomic Games computer game World at War: STALINGRAD game or maybe a PC version of the monster board game Streets of Stalingrad. Over the last few years, I have been working with some gaming friends on ideals for a simulation like this. No engine or program yet, just working on the graphics, interface, and playing concept. Last year I had two different gaming software companies contact along these lines but many sticking points.

Although there is much more detail than I have release I enjoy people getting a first look of where I’m going with it and how far I have came.

Many of the vehicle models were created by me and I am extremely happy with my sIG 33B and SdKfz-251-10 (Anti-Tank).

Here a first look at my color model of Dzerzhinskiy Tractor Factory & Volga east bank from last year. Two years ago I spent the summer (10 weeks) in Volgograd and lived in my Grandmother–in-law home across the street from the former round year-round cirrus building in the Tractor Factory District. (2nd picture lower right) It is now a open market.

                  Russ,

Man, that's some beautiful work you've created. I work with AUTOCAD everyday as a Civil and Structural draftsman so I can certainly appreciate the talent you have to do such not to mention the research! From my readings on Stalingrad that must be the Tennis Racket at the base of the hill;~) Do keep up the excellent work, it's wonderful.

                  Best regards,
                  Richard

Russ - OUTSTANDING!!! I justed finished going through your other pictures and you have for sure got a ongoing detailed project. You are going to need to keep us updated about the status if you are able to turn your quest into a computer board game. If you do, I for sure will get in line and buy it. Thanks for the follow up post and can't wait to see more of your project...
