Not really. When you are in the midst of combat, you're really not terribly aware of every little thing foinf on around you. The photographer didn't know what he had. It wasn't until the picture was developed back in a rear area that anyone commented on it.Originally posted by crowback View Post

This was the second one. These two marines may have helped raise the first flag.
In any event, to presume that they knowingly took advantage of being known as the flag raisers in this photo is a stretch.
Look at Ira Hayes.
He would gladly have forgone the publicity & fame that came with being one of the men raising the flag.Comment
