Reenacting Alfred Minchin, British Free Corps

I have always had an interest in WW2 collaboration, mostly in the Dutch Waffen-SS,
and of course the British volunteers in German service, Eddie Chapman, William
Joyce and above all, Alfred Minchin ( I have contact with his grandaughter in the UK).

My interest in the Waffen-SS really started when I married into a former SS family,
my father-in-law served in 2.AA Das Reich 1944-45 during the Ardennes Offensive.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that one member received the wound badge in black and that was the only award made to any member.

Yes, the Wound Badge in black was awarded to T.H.Cooper in Russia.

As with most foreign volunteer units, some of the officers and SNCOs were actually
German nationals, but would have worn the same insignia as the British volunteers.

The only one to fight in Berlin wearing British volunteer insignia was a German NCO.

I have covered this unit on about three or four pages on my website:

            Thanks Paul,

The website is a work in progress, already over 130 pages. I just have to find
the time to upload...... I have enough material for the next twenty years!

            Cheers, Bill.

Bill, I read through your list on BFC members, you missed two other Canadians on your list. Though one held dual citizenship (CDN & US).

They were enlisted with the Essex Scottish Regiment out of Windsor Ontario, and captured at Dieppe in 1942. You already have Edwin Barnard Martin.

Edwin Barnard Martin , CPL. John Gordon Galaher, Pvt. George Hale of the Essex Scottish Regiment (Captured at Dieppe in 1942).

At a military trial on Sept 28, 1945 they were sentenced to life imprisonment.

All were given a royal pardon in 1954

A very good documentary on the subject. I didn't know they were involved on the Oder River front.

                    Hello, Bill
I have just found your 'thread' on the Forum and found it fascinating. I met you about five years ago (in uniform) at the Detling Military Odyssey show and you introduced me to the BFC history, then. Great stuff.
                    Cheers,
                    Simon
