Then and Now - German American Bund in New York City 1939

What a surprise! The swastika flag in New York City long ago.

Here are two photos taken in the city on East 86th Street. The original was of the German American Bund, swastika flags and all, marching on October 30, 1939. Today, almost exactly 72 years later, I took the next photo on the same spot this afternoon. In 1939 you can even see a few people giving the Hitler salute. Today, no salutes and no marchers.

Sad to say, only a few of the buildings from 1939 are still there.

A rare event in American history for sure!

The Heidelberg is still around, isn't it? Diagonal from the Papaya King I think, 86th and 3rd Ave?

It's biergarten was a popular Bund hangout. Some of the staff know the history of the place. BTW Great German food and drink.

This area was one of the largest German neighbourhoods in the USA in those days.

The Heidelberg is the only one of the old German Restaurants still remaining and still open from the old German Yorkville neighborhood. It is located right around the corner from where these photos were taken. Not on 86th Street, it is on 2nd Avenue between 85th and 86th Street. Very popular and Excellent food!
