OAHU - Those "Not so famous" places

I'm heading back this July ... scene of the crime from last year.

Ok ... yes ... likely to do the normal stops again {of course!} like Pearl Harbor, the Punchbowl, etc. etc.

But ... there must be some other "Out of the way" places where history buffs would love to visit that are not advertised or on some tour.

I'd love to visit some of the old deserted airfields around the island or any other places that have some historical significance.

Now ... I'm not interested in climbing through the hills and cutting my way through jungle (), but would like to drive pretty close. Wouldn't mind a few hundred yards walk if required.

    Any thoughts? Suggestions?

P.S. Please don't lead me into a High Level Security Area. I'd like to be home before Xmas

Write to the public relations office at Pearl to get a navy sponcer to see the other Pearl Harbor sites not accessible to the public, like the USS Utah, Hospital Pt, Hickham Field and parts of Ford Island (good museum there but don't need permission).

Make sure you visit the excellent Ft DeRussy museum at Waikiki and there's another neat museum at Scholfield barracks. There's a WWII observation post worth the steep climb atop Diamond Head with good views.

If you're a diver, there's a must-see wreck lying in 100-feet of water south of Diamond Head---it's a WWII Corsair that crashed in 1945 and in excellent condition. I did alot "off the beaten path" WWII sites last summer.

Thanks Eric. How long does it take to get a response from them re: sponsor? I'll be there in mid July.

I plan on trying to get to the top of Diamond Head this time
I took in the Ft DeRussy Museum (awesome place)
I didn't know there was a Museum at Schofield Barracks. Tourists can get access easy? I might have to check that out ....

      Any old accessible airfields like:

      Ewa
      Bellows

      ??

How about any sites showing damage from the AAA that fell back into Honolulu from Pearl?

        Hi,

really envy you going there - live in the Netherlands, and for me it's - literally - halfway 'cross the world!

I was always curious what happened to the Fortress build in (I think) the North of Oahu, containing the main guns of the USS Arizona. Could still be something there, but don't know if it is open to the public. Might be worth checking out.

        KR,
        Frank.

          Frank,

I think you're referring to "Battery Pennsylvania," which was built at Makapu Point on what is now USMC Base Hawaii (Kaneohe). Either Number 3 or Number 4 turret from the Arizona was installed there, and test fired just before the war's end. The equipment was later dismantled for scrap. http://www.pastfoundation.org/Arizon...#WhyNotSalvage

But the mount for the turret is apparently still there, from what I can see on GoogleMaps and GoogleEarth. 21 27' 32.60" N 157 43' 22.80" W coordinates. I tried to drive there while visiting Kaneohe in 2008, but it looked like the only way to get up there was on roads that go through the training area (past locked gates), and I didn't have the time to get over to Range Control and see if it's possible to go there. I'd love to see that place.

So, Darrell, I don't know if you can get to it or not!

          Best,
          Greg

            Interesting Greg.

THAT's exactly the kind of stuff I'm interested in. Unfortunately I have a feeling most of these places are off limits to civilians.

From the linked Site Greg shows:

In order to place the present memorial over the ship, a section of the boat deck that rested over the galley amidships was cut away. Initially this had been the area of a flag and platform for ceremonies and visits to the site from 1950-1960. This portion of the Arizona was removed to Waipio Point where it remains today.

Might be worth trying to get to ....

              Hi Darrell,

When I was there in 2008 I also wanted to try to get to that location on Waipio Point, which I also think is a part of one of the military installations, but didn't have the time. If you make it to these locations, please tell us all about it!

Another out-of-the-way place you might try is Bellows Field south of Kaneohe and Kailua. The old airfield is part of a USMC training area, but the beach itself is open to the public most days. You can visit the site where the commander of the Japanese midget sub waded ashore on Dec 8, 1941. After his unsuccessful attack on Pearl Harbor his sub got washed around to the Bellows area, and grounded on the reef. There's nothing there except a marker at the military recreation area building, but you can get a similar then-and-now photo. http://hawaii.gov/hawaiiaviation/haw.../bellows-field

No, I didn't make it to the Ewa Field area when I was there.

The former WWII Ewa USMC Air Station is on the site of the former Naval Air Station Barber's Point. When I was stationed at the NAS in the early '90s, the runways for the old USMC air station were being used for auto racing . The hardened airplane revetments were being used by the base riding club as horse stables.

While I was there, a couple of shot up old Brewster Buffaloes were discovered in the woods. They had been pushed off the field and abandoned there after the 12/07/41 attack.

The NAS was decomissioned and returned to the State some time ago. There is a museum out there that has a website.
