This topic has been bought-up before but thought I would re-explore the subject one more time. Are there any Omaha Beach historians who know about the history of the big German 88 field piece that sits on the west end of Omaha Beach and protected the Vierville draw. It was known as H677 and today marks the Coast Guard memorial. The gun is still intact but the embrasure is covered by a fense so it is difficult to see.
What is the history behind that gun? I can't seem to find what damage it caused during the battle? Can anyone shed light on the issue?
Thanks in advance, Eric
