    Col. Butlers Tomb and Cemetary

Today I was fortunate enough to be a part of something really fun for me, but also very sad.

In my small town of Niagara On the Lake, behind my old house where I grew up is a small graveyard that most tourists and some locals would never know existed. Other then being a popular spot for kids to smoke pot and drink beer this place sadly remains untouched.

I kissed my first girl here, smoked my first cigarette, and woke up on grass at 6am covered in ants after my first experiance with Canadian Club.
Although we spent many days here in Highschool being no-good teenagers we never destroyed anything, and never made a mess, knowing aslong as we kept it clean we would not be botherd here.

Sadly because of todays youth whom have smashed all the rocks, spray painted everything in site, broken beer emptys and bottle tokers now litter the entire grounds, Parks Canada has decided to fill the entire area in with dirt "preserveing it" for another generation who have funding to repair it.

I will not write out the History of Col. Butler and his Rangers, but will give you to images from the signs on site to give you a small idea of whom he was.

The Rest of the Images are of the mosoleum where they kept the caskets of those who passed in winter months untill it was spring and the ground could be dug.

Col.Butlers Grave himself is somewhere on the premise's unmarked since the day he passed, for there was much defaceing to his name even back then.

So enjoy the Pictures, and if you have any questions please ask.

The grave of Col Butler himself is unmarked as there was much defaceing after he died, so i guess somethings never change, and we cant blame this on just todays youth.

We have such minimal history here in Canada, and what we do have the Government does not have funding for to up keep it.

So I hope you enjoyed my little post, as by this time next week it will be covered in top soil and grass seed.

                      Nice post

                      Hello,

I really liked this post and found it to be quite interesting. I have a Degree in Archeaology and I will be working on a dig in two weeks so this stuff has always interested me.

I agree that here in Canada we don't have that much history that jumps out as being earth shatering. However there are numerous things that we have done outside of Canada that have made huge impacts on the world.

                      Just to name a few:
                      - Burning down the White House in the War of 1812
                      - Standing up to the Gas at the Second Battle of Ypres
                      - Vimy Ridge
                      - Leading the last 100 Days
                      - The last stand at Hong Kong
                      - Dieppe
                      - Being the only other nation besides the Bristish and Americans to have our own Beach on D-Day-Juno Beach
                      - Kapyong Hill
                      - Solving the 1956 Suez Canal Crisis

We might have a small population for the size of our country, but we seem to be able to stick our hands in the honey pot when we want to.

                        Thank you so much Cam

Im glad you enjoyed my post, and i enjoyed your follow up,

We have a funny plaque in town i will photograph tommorow talking about how when the americans burned our town to the ground after retreating
we marched to the Washington to burn the White house, which is only white, because of the wash to cover up the burn marks i believe.
