    From looking at the photo again you are probably right and a light clean to stop any further corrosion would have been better

      Good job, I would have left it as is and I think you went a step too far polishing ,,, But once you give it an acid dip I guess the sky is the limit after that.

            Did you treath the eagle after the cleaning with some kind of save sealer?

              I have seen eagles with black soot and this was not one of them. Looks like corrosion to me. Good job with the cleaning.
              Looking for a 30 '06 Chauchat magazine.

                Would have left it as is, now its just another refurb without any soul. On the photos it does not look like corrosion, but original ochre color (as used by the Reichspost) that had oxidized.

                  I would say if this is all it's "deteriorated" in the last 70 years, than it's done quite well....In fact, any future corrosion was likely in a dormant state.....Having said this, I think I would have left well enough alone....I too liked the aged look.....Bodes
