    Renaissance Wax

I just received the wax and before I use it on my medals, daggers, etc I would like to know how you clean each type of item before applying the wax. Also, how do you remove Semichrome from daggers (I read somewhere that it could be done)? Thank you for your help. Jim

    Jim:

As far as "cleaning" medals and daggers, my opinion is DON'T. The only thing I would consider cleaning is simple surface level dirt, which wipes off VERY easily. However, I rarely even see such simple and easily-removed dirt on medals and daggers. I'd leave anything else (such as tarnish, patina, and whatever age-toning) on the medal and just apply the Ren Wax over it. It shouldn't hurt anything to do that.

When you say "cleaning", I'm really not sure exactly what level of cleaning you mean, but that's just my opinion about it. If you really want to clean them more aggressively for some reason, then just say so, and maybe someone else can advise you on that.

As far as removing semichrome from daggers, are you talking about thick semichrome that has been caught in the recesses of something (such as the etched motto or maker mark of an SS Dagger), or just a residual and invisible layer on a blade? Answering that could also help others answer your question.

Hope I've helped you at least a little,

    Chris

      clean

      Chris,

When I wrote about cleaning medals, I was just thinking about removing lose dirt or such as I like medals that have patina. As for the Semichrome, I was thinking of removing it completely and then applying the wax. I have only used semichrome on one dagger that was really grey and although it helped clean it a little I wasn't impressed. So I thought I would remove it totally if possible.

      Thanks for the help.

      Jim
