    SS Helmet Decal Removal

I have just posted this to make 100% sure it was not original. Now that I am sure I would like to know some good ways to removing the bad decals. Here is the thread:

Let me know if anyone knows of any ideas.

What do you want to do...

The paint is obviously post war too, why worry about conserving a post war flat black paint job? I don't know what you want to do with it but I would rough up that paint and paint it as close to feld grau as I could and sell it to a reenactor. Then save the money to get an original paint helmet.

Okay. That may be an option. Anyone have ideas of getting the decals off, if I did decide to get them off?

      Thanks,
      Mansal

its not a rare artifact i wouldnt think there is any wright or wrong way at removing a decal it will probably come right off with a little thinner i.e. will probably melt right off imo its junk the way it is now you are better off selling it as a reenactor special collecting militaria is all about preserving history NOTE: the thread section you are posting in (CONSERVATION/SAFE KEEPING FORUM) im not sure you will find the answer you are looking for sorry and good luck
Give a man an opinion and you feed him for a day,
teach a man to use the "search" function on the WAF and you feed him for a lifetime.

Yeah it's unfortunate that the shell is original, but paint and decals are not. No liner either, but oh well. We'll see what I can do. I have many options at least.

Just use acetone on it. The post war paint will come right off and the wartime paint(if it has any) will remain intact because the Germans baked the paint on.

                Josh,

Are you sure about this? If so, how do I apply?

I just put acetone on a cloth and wiped it off, it comes right off, but to be sure, do it under the skirt, but be do it outside or else you may run out of brain cells before you are done(it will make you high as a kite just breathing the fumes) . Mine was a danish capture that I took the danish liner out, and took the black paint off. Ill post pics sometime soon.
