I would remove, clean , and wipe wax on them

My two are worse than that, I've had them for 25 years +
Never crossed my mind to clean them.

I wouldnt touch it,its fine,apart from personal preference, id restore the eagle.I got a hbt that was manky dirty,took 16 gentle handwashes with mild detergent before the water stopped turning black,that thing stank! A rub of Autosol will clean up the S hooks.

....and stretch a section of pantyhose over the brush...It won't obstruct the suction but will minimize rough bristle damage....
