Ikea Mosjo Stand Works With Detolf

I love Ikea's Detolf glass cabinets and have eight of these. These are cheap and reasonably good at displaying helmets. I have found there are two downsides to these cabinets. First, these aren't sealed so you do need to dust inside every few weeks to once a month.

Second, for reasons I can't understand these aren't raised off the ground and Ikea really hasn't offered a solution. I solved this problem twice before. The first time I had a custom book cabinet built and the cabinets are perfect above it. Then I added two more cabinets and had a friend help me build another cabinet. The results were good, but it was a day wasted going to Home Depot, cutting wood, gluing/nailing then sanding and painting.

So while I was at Ikea recently I looked around and I found the MOSJÖ TV Stand. This is designed to hold up to a 42-inch TV with weight of 99 pounds. Well, I bought the TV stand and my friend (same friend as before) helped me assemble it. Now the cabinets weight more than the 99 pounds - and I did put helmets in. I thought about putting a center support piece but instead we glued the middle shelf to the top and tacked it with a few nails. This will reinforce the top of the unit.

Instead of an entertainment unit it becomes a nice book cabinet. It took 15 minutes to assemble as opposed to three hours of cutting/sanding/gluing plus painting, etc. I'm rather pleased with the results. The MSRP for the TV stand is also about $40, so it is cheaper than the wood, paint, etc. too. This also matches cabinets better than my two other book shelves!

I will monitor to make sure there is no bowing from the weight of the cabinets but all in all I think it works well. The only downside to using the extra shelf for added strength is that a couple of larger books didn't fit. If I see any problems I can always put a 2x4 in the middle as a beam and that will surely add the extra strength.

      Hi Peter,

Yes I have a couple of these Ikea glass cabinets, and I think they are great to display ones collection. With you putting your 2 onto the wooden bookshelf should be no problems, as it looks well made, and strong, and also having the books there will add more strength to the bookshelf, but I don't think the weight will be a problem.

They look great raised off the ground like that! I'll have to give that a try with mine.

Been to Ikea myself yesterday and I saw these cabinets. They look good indeed but get dusty inside unfortunately.

I also noticed these and they keep dust out and look really good on top as well
