A nicely modified and large sized French tropical shirt, not the set up for slip on boards. Also the German Soldier added some red thread to the front flap so he could identify it more readily I guess. Matt

            DAK Surplus sale

Looks like you been to a DAK Army surplus sale Matt

Fantastic assortment of original DAK items., the Weissbach Overseas cap is classic text book example.

Also nice to see the variation in tropical shoulder boards. Thanks for showing

              Mark,

thanks for the comments. I have not really bought much DAK in the last few years as pieces are just hard to come by and my drive for owning all the early Schutzen/Kradschutzen and PzGrn items has me spending more time on the hunt for those items. Sometimes one just needs to take a break from an area. That said I just can't say no to quality items at reasonable prices, hence what I just posted.

The French shirt is ridiculously large though! It could fit 2 if not 3 of me in it, which is kinda uncommon. This is the first one I have owned that was modified for wear by the Germans, but you see tons of pics of this in Afrika. I personally like the French shirts more than the German ones...

That all said they will be on the market shortly to help fund my collecting goal of the year so will see how it pans out. Matt

Nice cap Matt, looks familiar. Always liked the Weissbach's insignia application

Here is a short video of the DAK reunion of '53 along with some Desert Rats in a football match in Hanover that year....some of you may get a kick out of it

Nice video!!! Interesting to see the use of the DAK sun helmets with the tricolor shields, I know is 1953 and WW2 was a still recent event...but is this kind of postwar events and the public accepted use of some of the simbols (unit/tactical) and uniform gear of former enemies, this show the respect, understanding and spirit of corps among former enemies in this particular theatre of war. This reminds me also of similar events of the Fallschirmjager veterans organizations, where the soldiers respect and honor prevails over all other political/social views of the sad events of WW2.

                      Agree completely Federico,

The video is a real classic. Though Frau Rommel appears not to be amused. Its just eight years later after the War and some of the German Vets are wearing tropenhelms with the national emblem, sitting side by side with British Vets also wearing their tunics with awards etc, enjoying the reunion and football match. Can't think of anywhere or anytime this would be possible than other with the War in North Afrika. The isolation, hardships of the desert life and lack of hate all combined to create this unusual bond between enemy's. The kinship felt between the combatants is unlike anything else in the War or since....

Of course anytime there is a football match between Germany and England everyone's up for it, just oustanding

                      Heia Safari !

A nice selection of caps Sam. I recall the Schlesische Mutzenfabrik panzer when it was being sold and considered adding it to the collection myself but decided not to. Glad to see it found a good home.

                                Regards,
