Evidence of where Chevron and krim shield removed. Krim shield looks to have been applied well after the chevron as the fading contrast is much less to the krim sheild.

No cant see one there Matt, but he's still got those horrible Dak motorised transport boards

Also a good chance there could have been a continental chevron on the tunic.

Thanks Alfred, yes this 100cm size tropical tunic would have to be the biggest I've owned...most common sizes in tropical tunics that I have owned have been in the 92- 98 range. Once had an 86 and that was incredibly small

DAK 1st pattern

Greg, a great start to 2014, nice score, getting more difficult to find 1st pattern tunics and a big size to boot, well done!

Continental shoulder boards would not look out of place on this tunic either, Look forward to seeing the completed tunic

Interestingly and anoyingly this tunic has had its Chevron and Krim shield removed by a badge collector and was almost certain to have breast eagle and litzen removed when it was traded to a collector friend in Poland .

I dont know what kind of an imbecile of a collector could remove badges from a tunic like this in this day in age. If the guy wants badges, all he has to do is sell the tunic, and he will be able to make himself a new collection of Krim badges.

I agree JL I'm sure ignorance played a big part as well. I hate to think how many tunics of all types have been stripped postwar for one reason or another.

One of the reasons I like to post tunics like this on an open forum is to highlight to those less informed, non collector types that might do a google and come across this thread and think twice before destroying a piece of history.

But mostly I post to document the journey the item has taken and what is period and what has been removed and what will be restored and what it looked like before the restoration.

Often we see a tunic completely badged up and it draws suspision straight away especially to some of the the hand stitched patchs. With this Tunic its easy to see what was period and whats been removed. What annoys me most is the ribbons being removed as they would of been know use to the badge collector.

However any 1st pattern tropical tunic with its period applied breast eagle is truely a rare thing now days.

Just to confirm , the breat eagle and litzen are 100% period applied to this tunic, only the chevron , krim shield and ribbons have been removed.

What I meant in the opening thread was that if it had not been traded to the collector in Poland then they were very likely going to be removed by the badge collector. Thankfully they wern't other wise I would of had no interest in buying it. Appologise for the confusion.

Many times the POWs traded insignia to Allied guards for smokes etc. so not necessarily removed postwar...I would leave the tunic as is. Nothing better than a worn 1st pattern. Very nice.

Unfortuantely I know for a fact from the collector I bought it from that the badge collector did indeed remove chevron & krim just a few years ago. He was going to remove the breast eagle and litzen when the guy whom I bought it from said if you do that I'm not interested it. Otherwise this would of been completely stripped.

I will definately be restoring it with appropriate insigina and it will now be doccumented here for ever and a day for all to see what is period and what was removed and replaced.

Had it come from an estate in its present condition then I agree I would likely not touch it.
