Super Helmet Mark , I think it would have to go in place of the pith for the next family photo with the pith delagated to the centre of the caps. Actually now I think about that you will have to add another cap to make it all symmetrical.

Well Greg, I do have a nice little '41 dated Carl Halfar side cap that needs to be included. Perhaps that will give it some balance. Although, I do like your idea so if anyone has a spare '40 or '41 dated M40 "LET ME KNOW".

Just for your interest, I have done a restoration on the PzGren officers M40. It is the only cap that I will ever add a soutache to since it was screaming out for a complete restoration to it's former glory.
I'll add one pic and do a thread on the full restoration in the future. The soutache is quite bright but I'm not trying to pass it off as anything more than a restoration.

I picked this up off the E-stand a few months ago. I showed it on the headgear fourm, but thought I would post it here with a cockade I was lucky enough to find as well.

Not sure if you can call this DAK, but the date suggests that it at least could've been. Pretty salty. The eagle has old tan thread, and a newer green thread. It was an indirect vet purchase straight out of the duffle bag.

Mark, having seen that M40 restoration, I was wondering in your opinion if you would restore this cap...that is, reattach the eagle and apply the cockade? Or leave it as is?

I would leave the eagle as is because you don't know when it was applied or who applied it. Apart from the green thread it looks good. I would probably try to find a more salty cockade, something that would match the cap a little better, although this one would probably be okay once the excess material is sewn behind it.

I don't need to add any more positive comments about the helmet - but I will! Bloody RIPPA!! (I think I dribbled a bit...)
Just to keep the thread going, here's a field made set of NCO straps that I just got in. These were picked up directly from the Australian veteran in the late 70's who 'procured' them at El Alamein. They are also featured in Dal McGuirk's must have book - "Rommels Army In Africa".
