    "M" on Cholmschild

    Hello,

So far on this forum "the only true Cholmschilds" have "M" with central "V" in 2/3 height of the letter.

Recently I was offered one, which shows an "M" just like 1957 version, full-height "V". Were there any pre-45 version of Cholmschild which show such characteristics? One question I have is: why 1957 version was designed that way? Natural assumption is that they copied the basic design from the wartime shield and just removed the Swastika - so it is not a so unhealthy (though maybe uneducated) guess to assume that such a version did exist. I'd appreciate your observasion.

    Akira,

There are genuine wartime Cholm shields with both types of "M". It is simply a manufacturer variation.

Here is one of each type.

If you look at Detlev Niemann's catalog you will see that he also shows both types.

      Gordon,

I have the type where the 'v' touches the bottom :

      Cholm Shield

Can these 2 types be attributed to manufacturer variations or a '1st and 2nd type' ?

      Regards

        Dear Gordon,

thank you for your explanation, I highly appreciate it! I may not be able to acquire the said item but I've learned that I don't have to turn down an offer simply because it has a M with a full-height V Of course I have to look other features, but that's another story.

          Richard,

I don't think there is an issue of First or Second Pattern here. What we have is just manufacturer variation, combined with early and later issues, the early Cholm shields being magnetic and the later issues being Zinc. The actual original award pieces were reputed to be magnetic, and later replacement and LDO retail sales pieces in Zinc. Both the examples I illustrated above were magentic early pieces, so I would assume the variant "M" will also be found on later Zinc ones too.
