Wehrpass and award documents from a panzergrenadier soldier

    Hello,

Here's my last addition in my papers collection.
The soldier is Ernst WEIGEL and here's his story:

Wehrpass is opened in november 1939. He doesn't serve immediately in the army, and he receives the westwall medal on 18th july 1940.
He joins the 15th april 1941 as he fits for duty.
His instruction is done in the Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon 698, 2. schürzen ersatz kompanie (from Kaiserslautern) until 24th may 1941. Then he goes to 1./grenz infanterie ersatz bataillon for 3 months and then to feld ersatz bataillon XII/10 for 4 months.

On 21st november 1941, he's on it for real! He joins 8./schützen regiment 40 (from 17. panzerdivision). He's in a support company (8th) and formed with MG 34, so he's probably a machine gunner.
His unit is fighting between Toula and Orel at this time, 200km south of Moscow.
On 21st february 1942, he's hit by a schrapnel to the head. He will recover in 4 months. During his recovery, he's awarded for his fighting actions with the iron cross 2nd class (20th april 1942) and the bronze panzer assault badge (13rd may 1942).

On 30th juny 1942, he gets back on front, in the Jäger regiment 207 (from 97. Jäger division). He fights then in Rostov, Armawir and Maïkop (east of the black sea).
He's wounded again on 26th october 1942, by schrapnel on both arms. He stays in recovery unit for 9 months, til july 1943. He's awarded the ostmedaille and the silver wound badge (only 2 wounds, so this 2nd one is bad). He becomes gefreiter (corporal).
He has a medical examination that declares him unfit for duty, only for homeland work. He receiveds 50RM and he's discharged.
In july 1944, he has another medical examination, but remains unfit for active duty.

His story ends now, at least in german army.
Award documents of the westwall medal, EK2 and bronze PAB are present. Ostmedaille and silver wound badge are unfortunately missing.

    Greg.

Both signatures EK2 and Panzerkampfabzeichen came from Generalmajor Heinz von Randow

              Thank you Gerdan!
It was clear that Licht didn't sign it, but I didn't find yet who that was.

                Hello Greg/Gorg !

I find this a very interesting group. Thanks for showing !

Some remarks/additions to your well done research :
1.) I am interested in those uncommon Grenz-units of WK XII. This WP shows,
that the designation of Grenz-Ersatz-Bataillon 125 was much longer in use,
(at least until July 1941), then mentioned by Tessin :
                http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...rsBat125-R.htm

2.) I think, he was with Feld-Ersatz-Btl. XII/10 from 23.8.41 onward, so for about two months.
(Before, he spent about two months in the 6. Genesenden-Kp. (convalescent-co) of Grz.Ers.Btl 125).

3.) He probably joined Schützen-Rgt 40, when it had a short time of refresh, West of Orel in late October 1941,
after the important battle of Brjansk.
In Nov.-Dec., 17. Pz.Div. fought under XXIV.Pz.K. at Mzensk, Tula and Rjasan. Then it was driven back,
                roughly via the same places.
Afterwards, in general it fought/defended positions NE of Orel (since Jan. 1942 under XXXXVII. AK.).

The regimental history describes this time as a lot of suffering, especially due to the extreme conditions,
(a lot of frost bite casualities and a general lack of food and supply) in addition to the strong enemy attacks.

The actions related to his first wounding might be related to actions of "KGr. Mill" (I./Schtz.Rgt. 40), for which
Oblt. Mill was mentioned in the Ehrenblatt 19.4.1942.
This should have taken place near Kriwzowo (Krivtsovo) and height 196.1, 5km E of Bolchow, 50km N of Orel.
(On 21./22. Feb. 42, heavy artillery fire is mentioned, supporting a heavy Russian attack (assisted by tanks) on 22.Feb.)

4.) I do not have the divisional history of 97. Jäg.Div., but a photoalbum of a medic soldier from that unit,
which includes a diary. I thought, it might be interesting, what this "Sani" wrote, regarding those months in 1942,
were Gefreiter Weigel saw action with 97. Jäger-Division.
Therefore I'll show a page of that diary for that timeframe where Gefr. Weigel was with 97. Jäg.Div. and some photos,
to give an idea of the conditions and a more detailed account of the movements in late summer/autumn 1942.

The major task of 97. Jäg.Div. was to reach the coast of the Black Sea and to capture the respective mountain passes.
In August, the road of advance would be to the South from Apsheronsk, along the valley of river Pschecha and the Tuby pass.
In September, the units were regrouped and 97. Jäg.Div. was given the task to clear the path towards Tuapse, attacking
towards the West from Apsheronsk. "Operation Attika" started on 23.9.42, first along the valley of the river Pshish.
Both operations gained some ground, but failed in the end.

In case the diary is hard to read, some translations :
02.08.42 : we are arriving at the Manytsch, border between Europe and Asia !
14.08.42 : Far ahead, we see the summits of the Caucasus. Onward to Maikop.
15.08.42 : ... many orchards. We are eating a lot of apricots. ... endless woods ...
... Schirwanskaja, Samurskij. Dispersed elements of the enemy surround the village.
Short fighting. [On this day the Divisional HQ was temporarily surrounded, but could be relieved].
25.08.42 : ... Many wounded. We are deep into the mountains ... wounded are transported off by
                narrow-gauge railway.
[From 4.9.-3.10. he was granted leave.]
12.10.42 : Back with comrades. HVP [=main dressing station] at Travaleva.
17.10.42 : Accross the oil pass - camp in the woods - Arty fire - Stalinorgel.
19.10.42 : flood waters are pushing us out of the bunker
25.10.42 : HVP in a forest ranger cabin
01.11.42 : HVP in a tunnel near Navaginskoje

The attached map shows some of the places mentioned (yellow circles). (it is often difficult to locate those places).
On the day he was wounded, 97. Jäg.Div. was fighting in the area of Shaumyan (the junction marked with a red star in the map,
Southwest of the big yellow circle).

                Best regards,

                Archi

PS: Gorg was a mistake. I tried to suscribe this forum 20 times without success. But once, I typed a random "Gorg"... And I succeed!
