It is a Feuerwehr service belt worn also by HJ fire groups as I recall in seeing photos. It is heavy and cumbersome. I eventually sold mine at the SOS. I like the fire axe scabbard on your. The purpose of the climbing nail is a question. To secure ropes against buildings by affixing in brick joints?

Thank you very much for the information JoeW. I you dont mind me asking, what did your belt sell for ,and did it also have the axe scabbard ?

Does the axe look anything like this?

The hook is called "Notnagel" in Germany (emergency nail). Some of our older scrabbards still have the small pocket, but no nails anymore. They were disbanded in the 70´s.

The seviceman could in a wooden door oder wall for an abseiling in case of emergency. Or for other purposes, like fixing a rope for equipment towing.

              Nice belt with nice marking.

Thank you for the very interesting information hoover. Is it the right type of axe for this rig that I found a picture of ?

There were a lot of different types, different only in details. Your axe looks okay.

I would think the spike end of the axe pictured wouldn't work in the sheath attached to the belt. That axe would need a blunt back end for hammering.

Thank you both. Yes, it looks like the sheath will take an axe without the rear spike, will have to search for one.

Here is a photo of the one I used to own along with an earlier Fire Dept belt of cloth dating from the teens or twenties. Mine has the large snap hook like yours and the large D ring, but not the axe scabbard. Had it at several Show of Shows before sold it.

Nice belts JoeW, thanks for showing. I guess these appeal to a rather slim group of collectors since they have such an "anonymous" appearance.
