First runic, this is embroidered on a woven wool, the inside of the wool does not have a nap but a woven pattern, the top of the embroidery does not melt, but the underside threads do, the buckram has a matt appearance

          2nd runic,
the items is machine embroidered on a woven wool backing, the wool is very thick, again the top threads used on the embroidery do not melt but the underside threads do, there was no buckram in this example when I got it .

3rd runic, while the execution of the design is very good on this example everything melts, the threads used in the embroidery on the top and bottom are polyester, also the felt backing material is also synthetic and melts, the glue on the buckram is also synthetic, the strands that make up the woven material of the buckram also are synthetic

4th runic, this is an old repro and should not really fool anyone BUT it does I have seen this type recently offered for sale as original, the backing material is badge cloth (felt) very much like the period badge cloth, nothing melts the brown blobs you can see on the back are the glue, which is like the period glue and goes tacky when wet

5th another machine embroidered runic, the backing cloth can vary on this type, the one pictured below has a backing cloth very similar to the delta type backing material although i do not think that it was produced by them,
