    Saddle drum mags

    Dear fellow collectors,

I'm starting a data base on saddle drum mags for German WWII machine guns (13, 15, 34). I started by the MG34 PT34 mags, but found information was uncomplete if I didn't take into account the other models. Please, I need your help to complete the puzzle. Would it be possible for you to send me 4 or 5 photos of each of yours, showing the year, serial number, maker's stamp, logo, top strap, WaAs and the back part (with the numbers)? Please PM.

    Thanks in advance,

    Carles

    Up:

Thanks to those providing some info,

I've got 5 different maker's for the DT15 (plus the totally void of stamps) with 9 different markings, out of 39 mags and only 2 for the PT34, with 3 different markings, out of 34 mags. Too little for the MG13 and very bad info, only sad pics. There are up to 6 different release latches produced.

I need more help please. The internet and a couple of collectors doesn't give a full view of saddle mag production.

Mags are dripping in. I've found a mag stamped 936 for the Suhl weapon factory, so I've got most of the stamps for that maker: S (Simson&Co), BWS, 936, dfb. Latest production year for this maker 1941, till new mags come in.

                  Thanks Tim,

If you could get some pics it would be great, as there are some early and late making details I would like to limit in the production timeline.

                  Hello Bergler,

STAR is the rarest, I have only encountered 4 mags of that maker out of about 100 mags. It would be great if you could send me some pics. Please PM.

Here some pics of my DT15 from STAR. Straight out of the Woods, still totally uncleaned. Got 2 more as well with it, one wc and a HASAG.

It seems to be that there is one difference between those: the STAR is quite thickly painted in black. The rest of the DT15 that I have and had is blued. Never seen this before, or I was blind so far.

                      Hello and thanks,

One of the points I am studying is what saddle drum mags were painted and which were blued. The first conclusion would be: if air borne then painted, if ground use then blued, but not quite sure about that yet.

I know there was a Spanish weapon producer called Star...but i doubt they made saddle drum mags for Germany. They did make guns though.

Sorry Bergler, have you managed to find any WaA stamp on that STAR mag??

                        Hi Carles,

I do not think it is this easy regarding blued or painted. In my eyes this is always a question of manufacturer, or have you ecountered same manufacturer with blued and painted Versions, and LW acceptance or not?
Quite an interesting Topic you Research. I hope I can help more in the future.

and I had a look at the DT15 that I have now:

                          wa41, LW acceptance, blued
                          another wa41, LW acceptance, blued
                          wa42, LW acceptance, blued
                          awt43, no acceptance, blued
                          STAR, no acceptance, painted

I had some more before, but always blued.

                          Best wishes!

My study points when classifying the PT34, DT15 and PT13 saddle drums are: Maker, maker code stamps, production year, release latch type (there are about 6 different kinds) transport strap (leather, brown or black presstoff, canvas), if painted or blued, font and font of rounds loaded (0, 50, 75 rounds) and WaA or LWaA.

It would be great to get detailed pics of each mag, so I can confirn all these differences.

Thanks to all those members who have contacted and provided such information. I have listed about 110 mags but some of the information is uncomplete.

                              Gents,

Don't be lazzy, come on those pics.

I've got 77 DT15, 36 PT34 and 3 PT13. Move a bit and send me some pics. Serial number is not enough, I need about 4 pics of each mag.
