    ARP badges.

    Hello all,
    I wonder if someone could provide me with info on ARP badges? I have a few,some that are pinback and the others buttonhole.Were the pinbacks issued and the buttonhole private purchase or the other way round?....or am I way off track? Are they military,civilian...both??
    When were they first made?Most of mine are stamped with the year letter C but one has an A.

    Any info would be greatly appreciated!

    Here are a few badges.

    Cheers

    Dave

      Nice I've sold a few ,but the ones that seem to get the most money are the miniature versions .They are for civillian wear and judging by the number of them everyone who wasnt in the armed forces had one .Rob.

        Yeah,I've noticed they are pretty common! I wonder why they made them in real silver?Surely nickel or even bakelite would have been cheaper?

        Cheers

          Hi Dave, here are mine. I do not really collect home front items but I bought these earlier this year as the price was right

          They are hallmarked for 1938.

          Cheers, Ade.

              Very nice Adrian! Now I need a box for mine!!

              Could you possibly let me know what the date letter is on your badge for 1938?

              Cheers

              Dave

                Hi Dave, the letter "C" is 1938.

                Regarding them being made of silver, bear in mine that "silver" coins were between 1920 and 1947 made of 50% silver. So silver was still regarded as being fairly cheap.

                Cheers, Ade.

                  Hi Dave,

                  Here are some answer to your questions!

                  The buttonhole fixing was issued to male ARP members,and the pinback was issued to female members.

                  There was a late war variety which was made out of white metal as a cost saving measure.

                  The dates for the letters on the hallmark are as follows:
                  A=1936
                  B=1937
                  C=1938
                  D=1939

                  Hope this helps!

                  Kind regards,
                  Andy

                      Hi Dave, I know Andy has a boxed example too

                      I came across mine at a steam & vintage vehicle rally this year on one of the junk stalls. I get some good buys from these. He wanted £20 for the boxed pair. But I bought a load of stuff from him for £30, so these stand me a lot less than £20.

                      Cheers, Ade.

                            Hi Andy, talking to Lez about these boxed ARP badges she recalls reading something about badges coming in blue boxes. She cannot now recall exactly but seems to think one colour was for male badges and another for female?

                            Cheers, Ade.
