    Soldbuch TANK KILLER / Panzerknacker 559.V.G.D. Westfront 1945 !

    Hi Guys !

I am particularly happy to present here my latest TDB-Soldbuch. Gerhard F. was first destined to join the flying Elements from the Luftwaffe...... From Flugzeugführerschule B15 in Gablingen, he went to Clermont-Ferrand (Central France). But at the End of november (Nov.24th) he was one of the numerous LW Personal to be transferred to the Infantry.... These Guys were nicknamed "Hermann-Göring-Spende"..... At the end of december, he joined the 1./V.G.R.1127, part of the 559.V.G.D. (general frhr. von Mühlen). On 1.1.45, the 559 was part of the so-called "Operation Nordwind", a wide counterattack in eastern Lorraine and north-Alsace... After minor success against US Troops, the german were obliged to withdraw, suffering heavy Losses.... Gerhard destroyed a US-Tank during the late stage of this operation and was awarded one TDB on January 15th 1945, and Iron Cross 2nd class 3 days later. Interesting is that he became for his Bravery 2 weeks vacation at Home (note the term "Tapferkeitsurlaub"). 2 weeks at Home was the Rule for a tank Kill, but I really Wonder that this Point was respected so late in the War..... They are other interesting points in the Book : the Fact he was equipped with StG / M.P.44, and also that its last promotion to Sergeant (Feb.1st 45) was signed by a SS-Hstuf. The SS runes have been removed after the War (Gerhard lived in Ost-Germany....) but the Term "Hstuf" remained. This SS Commander came perhaps from the 17th.SS"GvB" wich was the Neighbour from the 559.during Nordwind, or came from the XIII.SS-Corps (Simon), I don't know..... This is a very quich Summary of the Historical Aspect....

Concerning the "Collector Aspect"...... I got the Book from a friend of mine, a german Collector, after a long "Struggle" to find the accurate Trade for both of us...... As I went Home, I tried to inform me about Gerhard F. himself...... I called someone in its village wearing the same Family Name..... the Guy told me "You'd better call him directly !!!". To my greatest Surprise, Gerhard is still living (89 !!) !! I have called him and we had a (difficult) discussion because he do not hear very well !! But he is "fit" and was able to answer some of my questions, especially concerning the tank destruction : It happened in "Elsass" he said, and the unfortunate Tank was a Sherman Tank he hit with Panzerfaust. He was unfortunately not able to Answer the exact location..... I will write in the coming Days to the German Archives to know if the "R.T.B." from G.R.1127 is still existing..... and probably organize a meeting with the Veteran soon !!
I have now 10 Groups or SB/WP from tankkiller, but it will probably be my last Opportunity to discuss and meet one of them...
Anyway, if anybody here is able to halp me with "Kriegstagebuch" from the 559.VGD or Regiment 1127....... he is very welcome !!
All your Comments are appreciated !! Lionel

The fighter school is down part of the base (right to the stadium). On original photo and with a loop it is possible to see german trench, plane....

Up side is Fliegerhorstkommandantur and the 1917 Michelin runway (first hard run in the world)

Did you dare ask how the Soldbuch left his possession?

What an excellent Soldbuch, I can only see the two scans here as well but Soldbucher to Western Front tank killers are very desirable indeed! Go and meet him within these few weeks Lionel - I too have had the regretful experience of waiting just too long to interview a veteran.

This is a great chance to do a taped interview with an exceptional veteran.

Time is really running out to interview them. I was sent a letter two months ago with a veteran's contact information, and with the info that he was still in good health and willing to talk to me. The letter got returned to the sender for some reason and needed to be sent again, so I only finaly saw it this week. I tried to call the veteran immediately, but was told he is now in hospital
